01 丨 Background reasons
The lights in the car were not working due to an intermittent short circuit, so the customer bought a cheap fuse to replace the original 10A fuse. However, the wiring harness, which runs from the fuse box in the car to the vanity lights on the sun visor, caught fire. The cause of the short circuit was later determined to be a faulty vanity light assembly, but the customer wanted to know why the fuse did not blow to protect the circuit, so we used a current clamp to observe the entire current change process.
02 丨Failure Analysis
The blue waveform shows that the inferior 10 A fuse shorted the power supply and did not blow. The 60 A current continued to flow in the wiring harness for nearly 1 second. The reduction to 0 A in the middle is a wiring problem, because the wiring harness has already heated up seriously at this time. At the last moment, you can see some voltage drop glitches, and the wiring harness has already caught fire and melted. Don't forget that this cheap fuse should blow at a current of more than 10 A, but it cannot work properly due to poor quality, causing the wiring harness to catch fire and melt. The red waveform is a normal OEM 10A fuse. Under the same test environment, the fuse blows to protect the circuit after a current of 60A flows in for about 35ms.
