Copying and printing are common and indispensable in daily life. You can see many copy shops on the roadside, especially near schools. Students and teachers have a great demand for copy shops. They need printing and copying for daily study, printing of study materials, submitting paper documents, etc. When applying for a job or handling important matters, you need originals and copies. Copies can be made by using a printer or copier.

The printer generates heat when it is working. You can feel that the printer body is very hot, and the printed paper is also hot. Why is this? Because when the printer is working, the hot roller keeps rotating and the temperature reaches over 100℃, so the paper just printed is hot.

The temperature that the printer can withstand is limited. If the temperature exceeds the printer's tolerance, the printer will be damaged and unable to work. The normal operation of the printer is actually related to the electronic components in the printer. Among the different electronic components, the thermistor is the one that is related to temperature.

What is the use of thermistors in printers? 1.jpg

Thermistors are semiconductor resistors made of semiconductor materials. They are highly sensitive to temperature. Within a certain temperature range, their resistance will change with temperature, and they will show different resistance values at different temperatures.

Just as numbers have positive and negative values, thermistors are also divided into two categories according to their temperature: positive temperature coefficient thermistors (PTC) and negative temperature coefficient thermistors (NTC).

Thermistors measure and control temperature in printers, sense changes in ambient temperature and respond to them, thereby controlling the operating temperature of the print head and preventing damage to the printer due to overheating. Thermistors are usually on the heat roller of the printer. When the temperature rises, the resistance value increases, and the voltage across the thermistor also increases; when the temperature drops, the resistance value decreases, and the voltage across the thermistor also decreases. Thermistors control the print head to adjust the paper thickness by measuring the resistance value and voltage changes.

In addition to playing an important role in printers, thermistors are also suitable for medical electronics due to their high accuracy, temperature measurement and temperature control. There are many types of thermistors, and when selecting a thermistor, you should choose the appropriate thermistor according to the application.
