Renesas Electronics Launches PCIe Gen6 Compliant Clock Buffers and Multiplexers

The new device is the industry's first complete PCIe Gen6 clock solution;

Multiple outputs, small package size, and performance margin for future needs

Beijing, China, April 14, 2022 - Renesas Electronics, a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, announced today that it is the first to launch clock buffers and multiplexers that meet the strict standards of PCIe Gen6. As an excellent supplier of advanced clock solutions in the industry, Renesas has brought 11 new clock buffers and 4 new multiplexers. These new devices have a larger jitter margin when used in PCIe Gen5, and are paired with Renesas' low-jitter 9SQ440, 9FGV1002, and 9FGV1006 clock generators to provide customers with a complete PCIe Gen6 clock solution for applications such as data centers/cloud computing, networking, and high-speed industry.

The PCIe Gen6 standard supports an extremely high data rate of 64 GT/s while featuring an extremely low clock jitter of less than 100fs RMS. Renesas' new RC190xx clock buffers and RC192xx multiplexers feature a PCIe Gen6 additive jitter specification of only 4fs RMS, making them virtually noise-free, allowing users to design their products to meet the requirements of the next-generation industry standard.

“PCIe Gen6 timing devices will be at the heart of new equipment in data centers, high-speed networks, and other applications,” said Zaher Baidas, Vice President of the Timing Product Division at Renesas Electronics. “As we have done with previous generations of the standard, Renesas is taking the lead in creating PCIe Gen6 timing solutions for our customers to support these new, higher-performance systems. At the same time, Renesas customers know and trust us to have the technical expertise and market insights to ensure their products meet future requirements.”

“By delivering the first split timing solution for PCIe Gen6, Renesas is enabling customers to develop the next generation of high-performance systems,” said Rich Wawrzyniak, principal analyst at Semico Research. “It will be interesting to see the innovation enabled by this new capability, especially when considering how solutions for the emerging chiplet market are beginning to evolve, with the need for increased speed and bandwidth as fundamental constants.”

Key features of Renesas PCIe Gen6-compliant clock buffers and multiplexers:

Ultra- low 4fs PCIe Gen6 additive jitter, 1.4ns input-output delay, 35ps output-output skew, and -80dB power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) @100kHz ensure robust system design

Save 30% space compared to previous devices

Selectable SMBus addresses allow easy use of multiple devices simultaneously

SMBus write protection function enhances system security

Loss of Signal (LOS) output supports system monitoring and redundancy functions

4-wire interface supports high-speed serial output enable/disable and device daisy chaining

Power loss tolerance (PDT) and variable start sequence (FSS) functions ensure good operation under abnormal system conditions

A winning combination

Renesas has combined the new RC190xx clock buffers and RC192xx multiplexers with a broad range of analog and power products to create a new “Winning Combination” that provides comprehensive power and timing capabilities for Intel’s latest generation Xeon CPU platforms. This pre-tested design includes the Renesas 9SQ440 clock generator, multiple intelligent power stage devices, an LDO, a USB host controller, and a DDR5 server PMIC. With multiple products that work seamlessly together, Renesas now offers more than 300 “Winning Combinations” for a wide range of applications and end products.
