Microchip releases new next-generation development tools for edge embedded vision designs, enabling developers to develop with low-power PolarFire® RISC-V® SoC FPGAs
Platform expands customer options for designing safe and reliable systems in applications ranging from neural network diagnostics to Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and factory automation
Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) today announced the launch of a second development tool for smart embedded vision designs for developers using the PolarFire RISC-V system-on-chip (SoC) field programmable gate array (FPGA). As the industry’s lowest power SoC FPGA of its kind, PolarFire is also the only mid-range device in its class to support dual 4K video processing and a quad-core RISC-V application-level processor, as well as support for running rich operating systems such as real-time operating systems (RTOS) and Linux®.
Microchip’s intelligent embedded vision development platform, coupled with the company’s previously released VectorBlox™ software development kit (SDK) and IP, can be used to program trained neural networks using PolarFire devices without prior FPGA expertise. The latest products simplify the development of edge computing solutions in thermally challenging environments for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and factory automation applications. The new platform’s IP, hardware and tools include:
• Embedded Vision – Supports the following : dual 4K MIPI CSI-2 cameras; HDMI® 2.0 based on FPGA mezzanine card (FMC) expansion; CoaXPress® 2.0; SDI (6 gbps and 12 gbps); Universal Serial 10 GE Media Independent Interface (USXGMII) MAC IP with auto-negotiation mode; and USB3.1 Generation 1 (Gen1) and Generation 2 (Gen2) protocols.
• Industrial Internet of Things and Factory Automation – Support for: Wi-Fi®/Bluetooth®, USB 2.0, SD card, embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC), fully integrated Peripheral Interconnect Express (PCIe®) endpoint and quad-configuration root port functionality; and mickroBUS™ connector for use with Microchip’s Trust&GO platform for secure cloud connectivity.
The new platform supports Microchip’s Mi-V RISC-V ecosystem, which includes development tools from AdaCore, Green Hills Software, Mentor Graphics and Wind River. Commercial RTOS solutions include VxWorks® and Nucleus®, as well as free solutions such as Zephyr® and FreeRTOS™. Middleware solutions are available from DornerWorks, Hex Five and Veridify Security.
Microchip PolarFire SoC FPGA combines thermal efficiency and defense-grade security for intelligent connected systems, consuming only half the power of similar products. PolarFire SoC and intelligent embedded vision platform provide developers with edge computing, hard real-time, 2 MB large memory and hybrid real-time + rich OS support for rich OS. Users learn one platform and can serve three applications.
