Intel announced a collaboration with Sumber to develop waste heat recovery technology based on immersion cooling for the next generation of data centers . Intel and Sumber are using Xeon architecture server systems and Submer's precision cooling technology to demonstrate solutions for the recovery of high-grade waste heat in data centers. This cutting-edge technology collaboration between Intel and Sumber will surely accelerate the application of immersion liquid cooling technology in the data center industry and the construction of the ecological chain.

Mohan Kumar, Intel Fellow, Data Center and AI Group, said: “Recent innovations in immersion cooling technology are helping data centers achieve significant improvements in energy efficiency, enabling companies to achieve sustainability goals. Our collaboration with Submer can be applied to all stages of the immersion cooling value chain and provide a sustainable solution that will make a difference for our mutual customers.”

In the context of global climate change, data center managers are more committed to finding ways to design more environmentally friendly and sustainable. By adopting immersion cooling technology, we can ensure that the data center infrastructure can solve the challenges of today and provide power for future use scenarios. As the use of immersion technology increases, it is crucial to establish industry guidelines for best practices for the use of immersion technology.

In current data center cooling implementations, heat is considered a burden. When heat is removed or discarded, the process impacts the environment and the data center's operating costs. The Precision Immersion Cooling Liquid Cloud concept uses liquid cooling to achieve greater efficiency and density, with the goal of reshaping IT thermal energy usage by incorporating precision immersion cooling architectures within each node. This approach helps ensure that the high-grade heat generated can be easily reused, monetized, and even used to generate electricity while maintaining the optimal operating temperature of processors and other components. This approach will ultimately eliminate cooling costs and achieve unprecedented improvements in total operating costs, turning the current cooling burden into a benefit.

“By working together to reinvent the way the industry currently operates, we are laying the foundation for server OEMs and operators to have a clear roadmap to transform the data center industry and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of their operations,” said Daniel Pope, co-founder and CEO of Submer.

In addition to the technical expertise that Intel and Submer bring to the project, guidance from a coalition of industry leaders will help build a supply chain that scales the technology, ensuring data centers have the ability to deliver a new generation of sustainable infrastructure. As part of the collaboration, Intel will focus on open standard products that support scalable data center deployments from cloud to edge and work with the industry to deploy these solutions. Intel has experience building a scalable ecosystem through a global partner network, which is critical to ensuring that the system is compatible with standard server materials and meets the needs of the global industry.

The cooperation between Intel and Submer is based on Intel's RISE strategy and 2030 goals, actively practicing the concept and commitment of sustainable development. Intel will demonstrate efficient solutions through innovative technologies, and work with ecological partners to continuously release the potential of computing power and data centers. As a leader in the technology industry, Intel is committed to promoting technological innovation to address the common issues and challenges of global climate change and sustainable development. Through the RISE strategy, Intel is committed to implementing Intel's grand purpose: creating technology that changes the world and benefits everyone on the planet.
