Renesas Electronics Corporation, a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions and memory interface products, announced the launch of a new high-speed, low-power DDR5 data buffer for data center, server, and high-performance workstation applications.
Over the past few years, the rapid development of real-time analytics, machine learning, HPC, AI, and other memory- and bandwidth-intensive applications has driven explosive growth in server memory bandwidth demand, and load-reduced dual in-line memory modules (LRDIMMs) have become the cornerstone of memory technology that drives the development of these applications. Renesas’ new JEDEC-compatible DDR5 data buffer, the 5DB0148, significantly increases speed and reduces latency for LRDIMMs. The first generation of DDR5 LRDIMMs based on Renesas components increases bandwidth by more than 35% compared to DDR4 LRDIMMs running at 3200MT/s.
“As the industry’s complete DDR5 solution provider, we have worked closely with customers and ecosystem partners to bring a broad portfolio of memory solutions to mass production,” said Rami Sethi, Vice President of Data Center Business Unit at Renesas Electronics. “Renesas DDR5 data buffers are essential for high-performance DRAM solutions such as LRDIMMs, other types of high-density modules, and diverse storage, enabling and improving the next generation of high-performance computing applications.”
Renesas DDR5 data buffers maximize system eye diagrams for heavily loaded channels through a combination of capacitive loading reduction, data alignment, and signal recovery techniques. This enables server motherboards with a large number of memory channels and slots and complex routing topologies to operate at top speeds even when fully loaded with high-density memory. In addition, improvements to the DDR5 module definition allow for lower supply voltages (1.1V in DDR5 vs. 1.2V in DDR4), intra-DIMM module voltage regulation, and advanced control plane architectures through the use of SPD hubs and modern control bus communications such as I3C.
As a veteran supplier of memory interface products in the industry, Renesas has been committed to the development of complete chipset solutions since the advent of dual in-line memory modules. As part of the overall product family, the new optimized Renesas DDR5 data buffer 5DB0148 can be seamlessly connected with other Renesas DDR5 components on the LRDIMM memory module, including the power management chip P8900, the registered clock driver 5RCD0148, the SPD hub SPD5118, and the temperature sensor TS5111, ensuring that memory suppliers deploying Renesas chipset solutions obtain complete interoperability and stable quality.
