Toyota Connected, Toyota's big data startup, announced that it will provide 10,000 connected cars to Avis, which plans to build a fully connected fleet by 2020 to simplify the rental process.
According to foreign media reports, the partnership between the two companies will be extended from this year to 2021. The deal is part of Avis Car Rental's overall goal of building a fully connected rental fleet worldwide by 2020.
"Toyota's mobility services platform will enhance connectivity and visibility across the Avis rental fleet and provide customers with more control and convenience to enhance their rental experience," Zach Hicks, CEO of Toyota Connected North America, said in a statement.
Under the agreement, Avis will use Toyota's mobility services platform to improve fleet management and help speed up or automate vehicle registration and checkout processing times.
"The platform's application programming interface (API) will provide Avis and its customers with rental information such as mileage, fuel tank levels and vehicle location in real time," a Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman said.
"Connected Toyota vehicles are expected to be available in September, with a significant number of vehicles entering the company's fleet by then," Avis said in a statement.
