Dubai is famous for being rich and willful, and even has a precedent of using sports cars as police cars. When Elon Musk showed up with his latest electric pickup truck Cybertruck, the Dubai Police decided to add this car to its police car fleet.

Tesla has received more than 250,000 orders for Cybertruck so far, and at least one of them came from the Dubai Police Department.

Dubai police said on Twitter that they will order Tesla pickup trucks as police cars and add them to the police fleet in 2020.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al-Mari, commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, said that these electric vehicles will be used in areas with the most tourists, perhaps as part of tourist attractions, so the number of this order will not be too large. There will not be dozens of electric police cars at the same time.

Without knowing Tesla’s production capacity, we have no idea when Dubai Police will get their Cybertruck. After all, there are 250,000 users queuing up for their electric pickup truck.

The addition of electric pickup trucks enriches the lineup of police cars in Dubai Police. The police cars you can see in Dubai include Ford Explorer, precious Victoria Crown, and even Bugatti Veyron, limited edition Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Aventa and Bentley. Mercedes-Benz G-Class, BMW i8 and Bentley Bentayga are just normal here.

However, most of these models are used on tourist routes to maintain law and order while showing tourists the prosperity of Dubai. In other areas, Dubai Police will have more practical Toyota Land Cruiser and BMW 5 Series.

Using sports cars and electric cars as patrol cars is a very normal operation in Dubai. This is a strategy of Dubai's tourism industry. Using sports cars and electric pickup trucks to maintain law and order can attract many tourists. Although these models seem to be expensive, they are just a small expense after considering the cost of maintaining law and order and the effect of promoting tourism.

However, according to US media reports, the Fremont Police Department once drove the Model X at a speed of 193 kilometers per hour while chasing a suspect, but the high speed increased the power consumption. After chasing for 16 kilometers, the police officer found that the battery only had enough power to support 10 kilometers, so he had no choice but to ask other police cars for support.

The incident sparked some controversy over whether Tesla electric vehicles could meet the range requirements of police cars, but Fremont police later admitted that the vehicles were not fully charged when they went out on duty.
