After SATA, M.2 has become the mainstream interface for SSDs. At the same time, Samsung is trying to launch the next-generation NGSFF / M.3 interface (later renamed NF1) for the enterprise market. Interestingly, at this year's Computex 2019, we actually saw the so-called M.4 SSD at the Silicon Motion booth.

At Computex 2019 earlier this month, Silicon Motion showed off a prototype M.4 NVMe SSD called Agylstor.

It is built based on SMI's own enterprise-level SM2270 master control solution, has three pairs of ARM Cortex R5 cores, supports 2KB LDPC error correction, has 16 NAND channels, 8 CEs per channel (128 CEs in total), and uses a PCIe 3.0 x8 interface.

From the appearance point of view, the Agylaster M.4 NVMe SSD is an M.2 SSD with two PCBs connected together, and 8 NAND flash memories can be soldered on both the front and back sides (16 on both sides).

At the same time, the PCIe 3.0 x8 interface can provide sufficient theoretical bandwidth, allowing this enterprise-level SSD controller to exert stronger performance.

As for Agylstor, it is actually a startup that specializes in developing dedicated storage subsystems for various applications, ranging from drones, video, and film production to the Internet of Things and oil and gas exploration.

In view of this, Agylstor does not need to worry about the compatibility of M.4 SSD with PC. As for when the company will release new M.4 NVMe SSD products, it is not yet known.
