Recently, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) officially released the national deployment plan for C-V2X vehicle networking technology, "Saving Lives with Connectivity: A Plan to Accelerate V2X Deployment", which aims to accelerate the deployment of C-V2X vehicle networking across the country, improve road safety, reduce traffic casualties, and promote a safer, more reliable and efficient transportation system.

The plan was originally released in draft form in October last year. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said: "The Department of Transportation has made an important milestone in developing a national plan for the transportation industry. The plan will save lives and change the way people travel. The Department of Transportation has recognized the potential safety benefits of V2X and will accelerate the adoption of this technology across the country."

In terms of specific promotion, the plan proposes to accelerate the nationwide deployment of C-V2X vehicle networks in the United States in three phases: short-term, medium-term, and long-term, from 2024 to 2036. The goal is to build a nationwide C-V2X cellular vehicle network by 2036, with 100% coverage of highways and 85% coverage of intersections in 75 major cities, with most areas able to provide safety services for vulnerable traffic participants.

The specific plan is as follows:

Short term (2024-2028): C-V2X vehicle networking coverage reaches 20% on highways and 25% at intersections in 75 major cities across the country;

Mid-term (2029-2031): C-V2X vehicle networking coverage reaches 50% on highways and 50% at intersections in 75 major cities across the country;

Long term (2032-2036): C-V2X vehicle networking coverage reaches 100% on highways and coverage reaches 85% at intersections in 75 major cities across the country.

In addition, the deployment plan also made clear plans for the installation of C-V2X in vehicles, and by 2036, six automakers will achieve mass production of vehicles that support driving safety applications, and at least 20 models will realize C-V2X functions.

Dr. Robert C. Hampshire, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary and Chief Scientist of the U.S. Department of Transportation for Research Technology, said: "The plan will accelerate C-V2X vehicle-to-everything market investment, research and deployment." Shailen Bhatt, Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), said: "The plan calls for action to strengthen joint efforts through deployment planning and accelerate V2X deployment to achieve the common goal of saving lives on the nation's roads."

As the national program gets underway, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently announced nearly $60 million in funding to three entities in Arizona, Texas, and Utah to advance the deployment of C-V2X technology. The goal is to increase the life-saving potential of V2X communications while ensuring that the technology communicates securely across a variety of devices and platforms without harmful interference.
