On August 5, Reuters reported that the US government plans to propose a proposal to ban the use of Chinese software in self-driving cars in the coming weeks.

The report cited unnamed sources as saying that the Biden administration plans to propose a new rule that prohibits vehicles equipped with L3 and above autonomous driving systems from using Chinese software, which will effectively prohibit Chinese self-branded cars from being tested on roads in the United States. The report said that this move was due to national security considerations. The US government is worried that smart cars using Chinese software may collect sensitive data about US citizens and infrastructure and transmit it back to China.

In addition, the United States also plans to ban cars from being equipped with advanced wireless communication systems developed by China. The proposal requires automakers and suppliers to ensure that all of their connected vehicles and advanced self-driving car software are not developed by "foreign entities of concern" such as China.

A Commerce Department spokesman said the department was "concerned about the national security risks associated with networking technologies in connected cars."

The United States has imposed tariffs of more than 100% on Chinese-made electric vehicles, and the Biden administration's clean energy bill has also made it more difficult for automakers to use Chinese-made batteries. The restrictions on Chinese autonomous driving software further demonstrate the United States' vigilance and suppression of Chinese technology.
