On July 11, 2024, WPG Holdings, a leading international semiconductor component distributor dedicated to the Asia-Pacific market, announced that its subsidiary Pinjia has launched an in-vehicle touch-sensitive ambient light solution based on Infineon PSoC 4 microcontroller, ams OSRAM OSIRE® E3731i smart RGB LED and Chipanalog CA-IF1044 CAN transceiver IC.

As consumers' demands for car interior quality and personalization continue to rise, car ambient lighting has become a core highlight in car design. With rich colors, adjustable brightness and varied dynamic effects, car ambient lighting can create a more comfortable and unique in-car environment for drivers and passengers. At the same time, the innovation of car ambient lighting has also brought new market opportunities to automakers, becoming an important innovation to attract consumers to buy. In response to this trend, WPG launched a car touch ambient lighting solution based on Infineon PSoC 4 microcontroller, ams OSRAM OSIRE® E3731i smart RGB LED and Chuantu Microelectronics CA-IF1044 CAN transceiver IC.

Infineon PSoC 4 is a highly scalable processor platform with highly programmable flexibility. Its core uses the Arm® Cortex®-M0+ high-performance processing core, and is equipped with a programmable analog front end, programmable digital logic, advanced CAPSENSE™ user interface and low-power Bluetooth module, which can simplify the customer development process. At the same time, Infineon also provides a complete set of development tools - PSoC Creator IDE (Integrated Design Environment) to help users easily create smart, connected, easy-to-use differentiated products.
In terms of LED selection, the ams OSRAM OSIRE® E3731i selected in this solution is an intelligent RGB LED (RGBi module) specially designed for automotive ambient lighting. The product has a built-in driver and control IC, and can communicate efficiently with the microcontroller through the SPI interface. At the same time, ams OSRAM also provides an open communication protocol (OSP) for the OSIRE® E3731i product. With the help of OSP, the microcontroller can send instructions to each OSIRE® E3731i and obtain the status, achieving high-precision color calibration and temperature compensation. In addition, the product supports daisy chaining, and a single link can connect up to 1,000 LED lights in series, and only a microcontroller is required for control. Thanks to this, automakers can create unique dynamic lighting effects in the car.
In terms of communication, the solution uses the CA-IF1044 CAN transceiver IC from Chuantu Microelectronics, which has a low-power standby mode and supports the wake-up sequence defined in ISO11898-2:2016. It also integrates multiple protection functions to improve the stability of the device and CAN.

In addition, the solution also uses the Infineon TLE42744DV50 LDO regulator system to provide stable and reliable voltage output. With the excellent performance of these devices, this solution can combine the intelligent interconnection function of the car to create an in-car atmosphere with dynamic colors and dynamic lighting effects, setting a new benchmark for car interior design.
Core technology advantages:
-
Infineon provides comprehensive performance and safety testing for PSoC, which has been used in many mass-produced models and is highly recognized by the market.
-
PSoC has a set of mature development solutions and environments, which greatly reduces the development difficulty and shortens the development cycle for users;
-
The PSoC series includes 4000S, 4100S, 4100S MAX and other models, providing a wide range of options for functional selection;
-
ams OSRAM intelligent RGB LED, with rich connection methods and scalability of 1000PCS in a single link, greatly reduces development costs. Converting multi-channel control to one link or one DCU can drive all LEDs in the entire car.
Program Specifications:
-
The solution uses Infineon PSoC&LDO, Chuantu Microelectronics CAN transceiver and ams OSRAM smart RGB LED;
-
Communication mode: CAN, I²C, SPI and debug interface SW;
-
Functionality: PSoC CAPSENSE (PSoC has built-in capacitance detection function for touch buttons, liquid detection and other solutions, supporting up to 300pf capacitance detection), PWM LED (ordinary light-emitting diode), SPI RGBi (multi-function, safety detection, daisy chain);
-
Multiple power inputs: Supports simultaneous access to the Type-C interface and the 5525DC interface, or using one of them alone to power the entire solution, which is convenient for debugging and will not cause voltage conflicts.
