GKN Automotive, a UK-based drive system manufacturer, said in a press release on July 20 that it is accelerating the development of next-generation eDrive technology to respond to the rapidly growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) around the world.
The company said that the next-generation eDrive system based on 800V technology has entered the late stage of research and development and is currently being tested under real conditions. In addition, the company also said that it is working with some major automakers to put these advanced eDrive systems into commercial production as soon as possible.
The company said the rapid development of the next-generation eDrive system was based on its experience in Formula E racing, in which it is a partner of the Jaguar Racing team.
“In the ultra-competitive world of electric racing, there is a direct link from racetrack to road, with continuous testing to improve efficiency, performance and extend the battery’s range. The advanced technology currently being developed for Jaguar Racing could very well be available for road cars within three years.”
IHS Markit’s in-depth analysis
GKN Automotive estimates that deploying 800V technology in its future eDrive systems will bring additional advantages to EV owners, including faster charging times and superior performance.
These eDrive systems can improve system efficiency and thus increase driving range, which will help address the biggest barrier to the global adoption of electric vehicles. The improved efficiency will also help automakers use smaller batteries, thereby reducing vehicle cost, complexity and weight.
Liam Butterworth, CEO of GKN Automotive, said: “Global demand for electric vehicles is growing rapidly and now is the right time for GKN Automotive to build on its leadership in eDrive systems with next generation technology. These advanced 800V systems will create vehicles that charge faster, have longer range, drive better and are more efficient.”
