TUV SÜD Group (hereinafter referred to as "TUV SÜD") has released a new version of the "White Paper on Global Market Access for New Energy Vehicle Battery Systems" (hereinafter referred to as the "White Paper"). The White Paper describes the safety and performance issues that must be addressed in the design of all new energy vehicle (hereinafter referred to as "xEV") batteries, as well as the special requirements for this type of product applicable to the EU, the United States, China and other major automotive markets around the world. In addition, the White Paper also introduces TUV SÜD's procedures for supporting OEMs in obtaining type certification in major automotive markets, helping them to enter the global market in a steady manner.

As the new energy vehicle market continues to grow globally, industry developers and OEMs are facing more and more compliance challenges with regulations and standards. These regulations and standards are designed to address the safety and performance of battery systems that power vehicles. Although most regulations have certain similarities, there are also some significant differences that must be considered at all stages of battery design. In addition, the regulatory approval procedures in major markets vary from country to country, and only by finding the right approach can type approval be successfully passed.

Johannes Roessner, global market segment manager for new energy vehicles at TUV SÜD and author of the white paper, said: "Innovative power battery and battery system technologies and high product quality will be key factors in driving consumer acceptance of new energy vehicles. For manufacturers, market access for their products depends on whether they can meet the requirements and standards of regulatory authorities in major global automotive markets."

The safety and performance evaluation of rechargeable batteries and battery systems is a key element in the development of xEVs and related technologies. "International standards play a vital role in this process, and compliance with standard requirements helps improve battery safety," added Johannes Roessner. "If manufacturers verify the safety of power batteries and battery systems from the beginning of design and development, it will be more conducive to the products passing the tests required by regulatory authorities."

Therefore, OEMs of power batteries and battery systems should foresee the challenges of the complex regulatory frameworks in major automotive markets and prepare for them in advance. By working with professional third-party technical organizations such as TUV SUD to avoid these problems in advance, OEMs can more efficiently and quickly launch products into the global market.

The white paper not only details the certification requirements for power batteries and battery systems, but also provides information on the United Nations World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Regulation No. 100. The book discusses in depth the challenges faced by these two types of products in the certification process, and how TUV SÜD supports developers of xEV battery systems to achieve global market access.
