When it comes to leading automobile headlight technology, we usually think of Audi, the "lighting factory", or BMW's laser headlights first. As luxury giants with a century-old history, BBA has its own expertise and characteristics in this field, which helps it stand out in the industry and lead the trend, and become the object we always look up to; but can they really only be caught up with and cannot be surpassed?
Obviously, the rapidly rising Chinese brands do not think so. With the development of intelligence, the automotive headlight industry has also ushered in a new transformation and new historical opportunities; at the same time, it has benefited from the rapid growth of independent technological innovation capabilities and latecomer advantages. To this day, it is rare for a Chinese car company to take the lead in the field of automotive headlights, and achieve the name of "China Lighting Factory" with a number of highly forward-looking and leading lighting "black technologies"!
Taking the first place in three categories, it is truly ahead of BBA
As China's first luxury SUV brand, we are already quite familiar with WEY. It does not continue the extravagant and cool style espoused by other traditional luxury brands in the current automobile market, but takes a different approach and is committed to creating a luxury SUV that does not feel distant and is within the reach of consumers.
As the flagship product of the WEY brand, VV6 has achieved very good sales and reputation since its launch in 2018, becoming the synonym of "contemporary Chinese luxury". So the question is, "There are many independent Chinese brands, and their star products are even more competitive, why is it this one?"
As the saying goes, the truth lies in the details, and true luxury is reflected in the details. As for the lighting system, VV6 has achieved the ultimate and won three firsts among Chinese brand models.
1. The first Chinese brand car equipped with intelligent ADB headlights
The first problem in the automotive lighting industry is that the low beam is not bright enough and the illumination distance is not far enough when driving at high speed. Although the high beam can illuminate far, it is also a "double-edged sword". I believe that every driver has experienced the situation of meeting cars at night and being blinded by strong light; but if they don't drive, they can't see the road conditions clearly, and if they drive, they always have to switch back and forth between high and low beams, which is very troublesome. Whenever this happens, "To be or not to be" becomes a headache.
Based on this, VV6 has developed the first domestic ADB intelligent LED headlight system, which uses a 1mm² high-luminous flux LED chip and consists of 36 independently controllable optical partitions to achieve multi-partition brightness uniformity of high beam lighting. It can automatically complete this series of "magic" operations invisibly, while ensuring the anti-glare of the illuminated target and the driver's clear high beam lighting field of view.
Its characteristics can be simply summarized as: bright, far, and intelligent.
In terms of illumination brightness, the ADB intelligent LED high-beam headlights can reach 130LX, which is 44% higher than the 90LX of ordinary LED headlights; in terms of illumination distance, ordinary LED headlights are about 170 meters, while WEY VV6 with the ADB system can reach about 280 meters, an increase of 165%.
In terms of intelligence, the ADB intelligent LED headlight system has a pedestrian reminder function. After the camera identifies the pedestrian in front of the vehicle, the corresponding position will be lit/extinguished/flashed by the high beam, reminding the driver and pedestrians to pay attention to safety, achieving the effect of protecting pedestrians without losing the lighting range.
(II) The only one in its class and the first Chinese brand model equipped with laser headlights
If you think the ADB intelligent adaptive high beam is not far enough? WEY VV6 also provides laser-assisted high beam headlights, which are unique in the same class. After turning on, the high beam irradiation distance can be increased from 280 meters to 600 meters, which is a bright sword piercing the night.
In terms of technical principles, as shown in the figure below, WEY VV6's intelligent laser headlights use a blue laser beam emitted by a blue laser diode to focus on a light color converter to achieve the technical principle of white light output for lighting, greatly increasing the irradiation distance.
The advantages of laser headlights are obvious. A VV6 traveling at 100km/h moves forward about 27.77 meters per second, but the irradiation distance of laser headlights can reach 600 meters, which can give the driver at least 15 seconds of additional reaction time in an emergency, greatly improving safety and solving the problem of vision problems when the driver is driving at high speed.
In terms of price, VV6 also showed enough sincerity, and the optional laser headlights only cost 10,000 yuan. Looking at the entire automobile market, if you want to get this high-end configuration, you can only see it on a million-level luxury car like the BMW X5. This shows the forward-looking technological strength and cost-effectiveness of the WEY brand.
(III) The world's first mass-produced intelligent pixel headlight model, the layout of "WEY coming"
This may be the first time you have heard of the concept of "pixel headlights". You can simply think of it as a movie player installed in the car lighting system. The smart pixel headlights on WEY VV6 can directly project text, graphics, and even play images through the headlights to communicate and warn other vehicles and pedestrians.
The DLP chip is used to control spatial light internally, making it a headlight projection system with a resolution of up to 1152*576*2 pixels. Each headlight group has two holographic lens modules, and a large number of technological innovations have been made in the fields of sensors and algorithms, giving the system its own "eyes" and "brain", allowing the car to communicate with other road users through the "talking" headlight digital projection technology.
What is the specific experience like?
You can supplement your imagination with several sets of pictures from actual experience, which are the virtual instrument panel projection function (projecting the information in the instrument onto the low beam display area), speed limit sign projection function (projecting the detected vehicle speed limit sign information onto the road in front of the vehicle), distance keeping projection function, vehicle width indication function, dynamic zebra crossing function (when the vehicle detects that pedestrians want to cross the road, a dynamic zebra crossing icon can be projected in the area in front of the vehicle), turn sign projection function (after turning on the turn signal light, the turn icon can be projected onto the road in front of the vehicle and flash to remind traffic participants).
It can be seen that car lights are no longer just a lighting tool, but have evolved into a window for external communication between drivers. Compared with the current mainstream car headlight technology, smart pixel headlights are obviously more advanced, cooler and more revolutionary.
In addition, the on-site engineer also revealed that the pixel headlights of WEY VV6 also support user-defined projection. After downloading the APP and connecting to Bluetooth, you can enter text, select pictures, etc., control the headlights for customized projection, which is very convenient for male classmates to express their love.
A warm brand creates the smart headlights that consumers need most
While experiencing the VV6 intelligent ADB headlights, intelligent laser headlights, and intelligent pixel headlights, I have been wondering why the WEY brand was able to "rebound" and surpass BBA in one fell swoop? Why does a car brand that has just been established for 3 years put so much effort in the field of lighting?
Obviously, the first question is easier to answer. The confidence of VV6 in challenging the higher-level vehicles is its strong technical support.
In addition to the smart pixel headlights which are "secretly" developed by the WEY brand with cutting-edge talents, the LED headlights that are standard on the entire WEY VV6 series, as well as the ADB smart headlights and smart laser headlights highlighted above, are all developed and produced by Mind Optoelectronics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Great Wall.
Mind Optoelectronics is a R&D and integrated solution company of Great Wall Motors in the field of lighting. The company currently has more than 2,000 employees, more than 400 experts at home and abroad in R&D, and an annual production capacity of 8 million sets. It is a strong backing for the WEY brand and a pillar enterprise in the industry.
As the pioneer of China's luxury SUV, the WEY brand has adhered to the strategy of advanced investment and over-investment in research and development since its inception, and has adhered to the technology-driven car-making concept, so that WEY brand products not only have many industry-leading and internationally leading advanced technologies.
As for the second question, I think we should still look for the answer from WEY’s brand concept.
According to a research report by a well-known multinational automaker, high-intensity intelligent headlights can reduce traffic accidents involving "vulnerable road users" such as pedestrians, bicycles and animals by 21%. If a car has both ADAS and intelligent headlight systems, then the number of crashes will be reduced by 49%. Especially at night, about 87% of VRU crashes involve animals, pedestrians or cyclists, and the probability of accidents will increase on roads with poor lighting conditions.
In the final analysis, it comes down to safety. As we all know, the WEY brand has been constantly strengthening its "safety" label since its birth. Whether it is the rigorous safety tests of various institutions or the cross-level safety configuration, WEY has performed very well.
