According to foreign media reports, Lamborghini is currently conducting multiple research projects with MIT, focusing on the topic of energy storage in supercapacitors. Supercapacitors can charge faster and store more power than lithium batteries of the same size.
Riccardo Bettini Lamborghini, head of R&D projects, said that although electrification is the development direction of future car models, the current lithium batteries are not actually the ideal solution for us at Lamborghini. You know, we are very sensitive to "weight".
The Terzo Millennio concept car unveiled in 2017 features a small supercapacitor called Sián FKP 37, which can be charged three times faster than lithium batteries. When combined with a 6.5L V12 engine and a 48V motor, the new car can generate a maximum power of 808 horsepower.
Although the supercapacitors in the concept car work well, in the future, Lamborghini will use larger and more advanced supercapacitors. For example, MIT recently obtained a patent for a new synthetic material that can further improve the performance of supercapacitors. In the future, it may take another 2 to 3 years for this technology to be put into practical use.
