According to foreign media reports, Hyundai Mobis announced the development of new rear automatic emergency braking (R-AEB) technology. This is the world's first use of USRR (ultra-short-range radar) for R-AEB, which reacts faster and has a wider detection range than traditional ultrasonic sensors, helping to prevent unexpected reversing accidents.

AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) technology detects people or objects behind the vehicle through sensors. If the driver does not brake after the alarm sounds, the system will force the brakes to prevent a collision. Currently, R-AEB systems generally use ultrasonic sensors, and cameras are also used to improve performance. Hyundai Mobis uses radar for parking assistance technology, which can overcome the shortcomings of ultrasonic waves (affected by wind or noise) and cameras (unable to identify objects in the dark), thereby improving system performance.
Ultrasonic sensors can detect objects up to 3 meters behind the vehicle, while Hyundai Mobis' USRR has a detection range of up to 5 meters. The longer detection range can predict unexpected collisions and therefore facilitate active response. The system can detect distant objects in advance and issue a warning and perform emergency braking when an object enters the collision range.
Ultrasonic sensors cannot respond to moving pedestrians or objects, while USRR has a wide detection range and can detect moving objects more effectively. Ultrasonic waves are carried in the air and are affected by temperature, humidity, and wind. Therefore, the detection performance of ultrasonic sensors will decrease when encountering strong winds. In addition, it will be affected by ultrasonic signals from other cars or noise from motorcycles and trucks. USRR uses electromagnetic waves, which is not affected by the above factors and has more reliable performance. In addition, existing ultrasonic sensors need to drill holes in the bumper for installation, while USRR has a unique design and can be installed inside the bumper without affecting the aesthetic design of the bumper.
Hyundai Mobis has verified the performance of the technology in 12 situations during actual driving, including nearby pedestrians and objects, narrow parking spaces, and speed bump detection. The technology also complies with Euro-NCAP9 ( European crash test ) and IIHS (American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) R-AEB tests.
