Many different applications are made possible by the use of bidirectional amplifiers, that is, bidirectional amplifiers that can process signals in opposite directions on a single path. For example, remote industrial communications use such systems to send full-duplex signals on a single path.

Similarly, a two-way TV cable system (such as a modem cable) requires two amplifiers. The figure shows how a hybrid coupler can perform this bidirectional amplifier function. In some telecommunications textbooks, the two directions are called "East" and "West", so this amplifier is sometimes called an East-West (EW) amplifier. This circuit is usually called a repeater.
As shown in the figure, the bidirectional east-west amplifier, amplifier A, amplifies the signal from west to east. At the same time, amplifier AL, amplifies the signal from east to west. In each case, the amplifiers are connected to mixers HB1 and HB2 through opposite ports so that they do not interfere with each other. Otherwise, if the two amplifiers are connected in an input-output-input-output manner, there will be a lot of destructive feedback, resulting in catastrophic results.
