This circuit uses an attenuator field effect transistor (FET) to shunt the signal to ground. The R2 is used to control the output level (attenuation level), but you can use other sources of voltage signals to control the grid of the FET such as a DAC output, which is a negative signal voltage (you can use the DAC to adopt symmetry with the power supply system).
