Countries around the world have clearly defined policies to eliminate or restrict the use of incandescent lamps, and incandescent lamps will gradually exit the stage of history; and the energy-saving lamps that are currently being vigorously promoted have also been repeatedly criticized due to environmental issues. It has basically been a consensus in the industry that LED lighting fixtures will become the main lighting fixtures in the future. However, at present, there are still some problems in the promotion of LED. How can LED be accepted by users and truly become a mainstream lamp? The author believes that in order to solve the current problems, it is necessary to find an application method that can give full play to its advantages. This is a common test faced by the LED industry.
Innovative design is the only way out
The power of a single LED is not large. If a higher power is required, several LEDs are needed to achieve the designed power, so there is a heat dissipation problem. If this problem cannot be effectively solved, the product life will be affected. Current LED lamps all require heat dissipation devices, which results in larger size and higher cost.
At present, LED lamps are mostly designed based on the basic elements of incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps, that is, except for the light-emitting tube, they are based on the original lamp elements, which makes the advantages of LED lighting not fully utilized and leads to high costs. The price of LED lamps is several times higher than that of energy-saving lamps and high-pressure sodium lamps. The high price of LED also affects its competitiveness in the market. Therefore, the style and structure of LED lamps inherit the basic style of incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps, which is relatively smooth for application, but it loses the characteristics of LED itself. It is inevitable that it lacks competitiveness by using its own shortcomings to attack the opponent's strengths. Therefore, only innovative design can have a way out and create the future of LED.
DC power supply directly to LED lamps
Chinese LED lighting companies should make a difference in LED applications. The author believes that if we want to manufacture lamps that can best demonstrate the advantages of LED, the premise is to provide DC power, directly supply LED lamps, reduce drive circuits, use fewer electronic components, use space to dissipate heat, and use fewer or no radiators for lamps. If there is a road DC system to provide power, it will reduce electronic circuits and components, saving costs and extending life. At present, converting AC power to DC power accounts for about 20% of the cost of the product. In terms of working voltage, as long as it does not affect the power supply quality and does not cause voltage drop, that is, the design can meet the requirements of lamps and power supply.
Lighting fixtures are mainly used indoors and outdoors, with street lamps being the main outdoor applications. These are closely related to engineering construction, which is the largest market for lighting fixtures. The author suggests that we consider providing low-voltage DC power supply for lighting systems in new buildings, and also consider developing low-voltage DC power supply systems for road lighting. This will reduce construction costs, and the future of LED lighting will be broader. I believe that it will soon become a mainstream lighting fixture.
Editor's Note: Using a direct current system to directly supply LED lamps can reduce the cost of lighting products, which is an innovative idea. However, there are also many technical and management issues that deserve further discussion and consideration.
