Searching for new light sources

Whether it is LCD, LCOS or DLP projector, light source technology is one of its core technologies. The currently widely used UHE and UHP bulbs have high light efficiency and can output higher brightness, but the complex optical path structure and high requirements of the heat dissipation system they bring affect the further reduction of the projector size. At the same time, its lifespan of 2000 to 3000 hours also greatly increases the later use cost of the projector. Based on these factors, the innovation of projector light source will become an important direction for future technological development.

LED light source

LED (Lighy Emitting Diode), also known as light-emitting diode, uses solid semiconductor chips as light-emitting materials. When a forward voltage is applied to both ends, the carriers in the semiconductor recombine, releasing excess energy to cause photon emission to produce visible light. LED light sources have long been used in the fields of display and lighting.

High-brightness LEDs have been around for a long time, but due to the huge technical difficulties in manufacturing high-brightness blue LEDs, the red, green and blue primary colors of high-brightness LEDs are color-deficient and have not been used as light sources for projectors. In recent years, the technical difficulties in the production of high-brightness blue LEDs have been resolved, and high-brightness three-primary color LEDs have been perfectly solved, making them the backlight source for projector LCD displays.

LED light source will bring more perfect color performance and greatly improve color reproducibility. At the same time, the small size and low power consumption will enable the projector to truly project anytime and anywhere. The ultimate demands of the projector, such as small size, long life, and fast shutdown, can all be solved by LED light source.

If we analyze it from a technical perspective, DMD technology must use a color wheel to split the light, which not only causes a loss in light source efficiency, but also affects noise, rainbow effects, and the color of the single-chip panel. If primary color LED light sources can be achieved, then DLP will not only achieve a qualitative improvement in color, but will also likely achieve "no consumables"; and as for LCD, if primary color LED light sources are also used, then the optical path will be greatly simplified, and dust and heat dissipation will no longer be a big problem.
