Cascading use of counters

A decimal counter can only display ten numbers from 0 to 9. In order to expand the counter range, multiple decimal counters are often used in cascade.

Synchronous counters often have a carry (or borrow) output terminal, so their carry (or borrow) output signal can be used to drive the next level counter.

The following figure is a schematic diagram of the addend cascade formed by 74LS192 using the carry output to control the addend terminal of the higher bit:
