ON Semiconductor Completes Acquisition of GT Advanced Technologies
Strengthens ON Semiconductor’s ability to drive innovation and invest in disruptive, high-growth technologies
Expanding ON Semiconductor’s silicon carbide (SiC) capabilities to meet customer demand for SiC-based solutions
Ensuring supply of SiC devices to customers and supporting rapid growth of a sustainable ecosystem
November 2, 2021 - ON Semiconductor, a leader in smart power and smart sensing technologies, announced on November 1, U.S. time that it has completed the acquisition of GT Advanced Technologies ("GTAT"), a silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturer. This acquisition enhances ON Semiconductor's ability to secure and increase SiC supply.
ON Semiconductor's customers will benefit from GTAT's extensive experience in crystal growth and its impressive technical capabilities and expertise in developing wafer-ready SiC. SiC is an important component of next-generation semiconductors, providing technological advantages and improving system energy efficiency in many applications, including electric vehicles (EVs), EV charging and energy infrastructure. ON Semiconductor intends to expand and accelerate GTAT's SiC development to ensure the supply of key devices to customers and further commercialize smart power technology.
“We are excited to complete this acquisition, which enables us to increase our SiC supply and fulfill our mission to build a sustainable future,” said Hassane El-Khoury, President and CEO of ON Semiconductor. “As we move toward a carbon-free economy, SiC technology is a key enabler for energy-efficient electric vehicles, renewable energy and zero-emission charging infrastructure. With the integration of GTAT, ON Semiconductor can now provide end-to-end power solutions from SiC crystal growth to fully integrated intelligent power modules.”
“We are proud to welcome GTAT’s talented employees to the ON Semiconductor family,” continued El-Khoury. “Their experience and insights in the SiC space are second to none, and we look forward to working together to drive important new innovations that are critical to the development of a sustainable ecosystem.”
This acquisition reinforces ON Semiconductor's commitment to making significant investments in disruptive, high-growth technologies to drive innovation and leadership, including investments in the SiC ecosystem. ON Semiconductor plans to invest in expanding GTAT's production facilities and support R&D efforts to advance 150mm and 200mm SiC crystal growth technologies, while also investing in the broader SiC supply chain, including fab capacity and packaging.
