Smart switch family Power PROFET™ + 12V provides ultra-low resistance switches for automotive applications, enabling modern power distribution architectures
[Munich, Germany, August 8, 2023] Since relays and fuses cannot meet the requirements of modern E/E vehicle architectures, partial or full electrification of primary and secondary power distribution must be considered. To solve this problem, Infineon Technologies AG has launched a new generation of ultra-low resistance high-side switch family series Power PROFET™ + 12V in TO lead-free package.
The Power PROFET™ + 12V series supports new installation positions and housing options to help realize a new generation of high-efficiency distributed power architecture. The series offers two models, the BTS50005-1LUA with an on-resistance (RDS(ON)) of 0.6 mΩ and the BTS50010-1LUA with an on-resistance (RDS(ON)) of 1.0 mΩ, which have the lowest power loss in the industry. These two products are designed for high-current applications such as controlling heaters, pumps and fans, especially in hot cabins and engine compartments that require high surge currents. And these two products can also have more than 1 million switching cycles, which is much higher than the average 200,000 switching cycles of relays.
The switches can replace electromechanical relays, fuses and discrete circuits in distribution boxes and other applications up to 65 A in 12 V electrical systems. In addition, the switches have a variety of built-in protection and diagnostic functions, such as short circuit, overcurrent and overtemperature protection. Therefore, these semiconductor devices not only provide comprehensive protection, but also provide fault signals to the connected microcontroller through the diagnostic pin to perform advanced diagnostics on the power distribution module. With their robustness and protection and diagnostic functions, the switches can prevent distribution network failures and thus improve the reliability of the entire vehicle.
Both smart power switches are available in an 8-pin TO lead-free package, which reduces the required board space by 23% compared to the traditional D2PAK package, but has similar thermal performance to D2PAK. Load current detection accuracy is improved to 5%, which can be evaluated by reading the analog voltage on the IS pin. In addition, this series of products has passed PRO-SIL™ ISO 26262 certification and comes with safe use instructions to support hardware component evaluation in accordance with the ISO 26262 standard.
To simplify the design-in process of Power PROFET™ +12V devices, the family has been integrated into the Infineon Smart Switch Internal Fuse Tool and the Infineon Smart Power Switch kILIS Tool, both available from the Infineon Developer Center. The Infineon Smart Switch Internal Fuse Tool supports the calculation of the fusing characteristics based on the embedded overtemperature protection function of the selected product under specific boundary conditions. The kILIS tool is used to calculate and visualize the current sensing range of the selected product at a specific load current, taking into account the kILIS rate, current sensing resistor and ADC tolerance.
Availability
The Power PROFET™ + 12V switches BTS50005-1LUA and BTS50010-1LUA are in production now and for easy design-in and evaluation, Infineon also offers an Arduino Shield (BOARD BTS50005-1LUA). The series will be expanded to 24 V and 48 V power networks in the near future and samples are available on request.
