The fully integrated TMC6140-LA simplifies high-performance brushless DC motor drive system design and improves efficiency by 30%

Beijing, China – August 17, 2021 – TRINAMIC Motion Control GmbH & Co. KG (a subsidiary of Maxim Integrated Products, Inc (NASDAQ: MXIM)) announced the launch of the fully integrated TMC6140-LA 3-phase MOSFET gate driver, which effectively simplifies the design of brushless DC (DC) motor drives and maximizes battery life. The TMC6140-LA 3-phase MOSFET gate driver integrates a low-side current-sense amplifier for each phase to form a complete motor drive solution; compared with similar products, the number of components is halved and the power efficiency is improved by 30%, greatly simplifying the design.

The TMC6140-LA is optimized for performance over a wide voltage range, making it ideal for applications such as servo motors, brushless motors, and permanent magnet synchronous motors. The three-phase gate driver is equipped with corresponding pins to facilitate the addition of a charge pump to statically stabilize the gate voltage of the external MOSFET in the three-phase motor with a coil current of up to 100A. The gate driver is packaged in a 36-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) package and provides a flexible solution for 5V to 30V DC and 0.5A or 1.0A battery-powered applications, such as power tools where the voltage may be less than 10V. Integrated current sensing and diagnostic functions simplify the design while improving functional safety.

Key Benefits

Smallest size, simplified design: The TMC6140-LA integrates three low-side current-sense amplifiers for current sensing and diagnostics, as well as a switching regulator; compared with similar products, it simplifies the design while reducing the number of components by 50%.

Extended battery life: For applications with voltages of 15V or less, switching regulators are used to provide a stable supply voltage to ensure that a stable output signal is maintained throughout the battery life.

Enhanced diagnostics: Integrated current-sense amplifiers provide current monitoring and report status information. Analog programmable short-circuit detection and diagnostic outputs provide status feedback to the host.

evaluate

“Integrated current sensing and diagnostics are key to ensuring functional safety without adding complex circuitry or additional components to the system design,” said Michael Randt, founder of Trinamic Motion Control. “This makes it very easy for engineers to increase efficiency by 30 percent.”

Availability and Pricing

The TMC6140-LA is available for purchase starting at $2.68 (1,000-up, FOB USA) through authorized Trinamic distributors.

The TMC6140-EVAL evaluation board and TMC6140-EVAL-KIT evaluation kit (with bridge and driver boards) are available for $66 and $130, respectively.
