Recent innovations in the technology industry for wireless charging of electric vehicles may finally free these new energy vehicles from the constraints of heavy battery modules. Recently, Tesla, a well-known American electric car manufacturer, is currently vigorously researching wireless charging technology for electric vehicles in urban areas. On the other hand, a project jointly led by Volvo Group, Alstom of France and the Swedish Energy Agency is testing a system for charging electric vehicles on fast roads.
It is reported that the main content of this project is to lay two cables in the road and allow electric vehicles to be continuously charged while passing by.
In fact, Volvo Group built a 0.25-mile test road at its test center in Hällered, Sweden as early as last year, with cables laid inside. After that, a test truck with a current collector will automatically connect to the cable when passing through this road, and 750V DC will charge the vehicle and pass through an on-board water cooling device.
Volvo said in a statement about the test that to ensure safety, the cables in the test road will only be activated when a truck passes directly above it. Previously, the company had only conducted the test with Volvo FH12 diesel trucks, but Volvo plans to conduct similar tests with electric vehicles in the future.
It should be said that a similar "electrified road system" means that future electric vehicles will be able to completely get rid of the constraints of heavy battery modules on board, and the battery range problem that has plagued electric vehicles for a long time will also be completely solved. In this regard, Volvo Group said that the design of the "electrified road system" will be more economical than the so-called "laying aerial cables" method.
However, although this plan will benefit many parties after it is finally realized, Volvo experts said that there are still many problems to be solved in this project, such as the design of vehicle collectors, electric vehicles, control systems, road construction, maintenance, and how car owners pay.
However, this high-tech solution seems to be more suitable for the United States, because many highways in the region are aging, and frequent natural disasters have damaged many overhead power grids. Moreover, considering the fact that cable cars once became the daily means of transportation for the American people, this future "cable car" plan may achieve better results in the country.
