Ahead of the flagship product launch later this week, Keysight Technologies automotive strategist Bill McKinley offers his thoughts on autonomous driving and the rapidly changing connected and autonomous vehicle landscape.
Bill has over 30 years of experience in wireless communications and currently focuses on developing test solutions for the automotive industry.
Bill said: “There is a huge investment in the connectivity and electrification of vehicles around the world – both the vehicles themselves and the charging infrastructure. Connected vehicles have been shown to improve safety through C-V2X and Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC).
“These technologies can make driving more efficient, for example, by planning routes to avoid accidents or poor road conditions. They can also enable higher levels of automation, all of which can improve the overall driving experience.”
“The first fully autonomous vehicles will likely be logistics vehicles, controlled environment shuttle services and buses on specific routes. As driverless taxis are gradually introduced, we will undoubtedly start to see mobility as a service (MaaS) become more common over the next 10-15 years.”
"From Keysight's perspective, we play an important role at the forefront of connected and autonomous vehicles. We participate in various global organizations that set standards, test procedures and certifications for the industry, including the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), Car 2 Car Communication Consortium (C2C CC), China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), OmniAir Alliance and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)."
“Keysight is the first test and measurement company to receive Global Certification Forum (GCF) C-V2X RF Conformance certification, we have industry-leading test cases for C-V2X protocol conformance testing validation, and we are the first to achieve OmniAir Qualified Test Equipment (OQTE) status.”
"Cybersecurity will play a critical role in connected mobility, and Keysight is working with leading companies and organizations in this space to develop solutions to ensure vehicle communications remain secure and robust against attacks."
“Obviously, the main risk associated with autonomous vehicles is in terms of safety, which in turn will have a significant impact on public acceptance of the technology.”
“Overcoming the complexity of urban autonomous driving remains very challenging, but things are improving all the time. Our Automated Driving Emulator (ADE) platform is designed with this in mind – it is possible to test many autonomous driving systems in a rich and realistic environment in the lab before moving testing to the field.”
