u-blox helps customers improve grid management efficiency with GNSS technology
Nortroll, a member of the Sicame Group, has been developing tools to reduce the duration and impact of power outages by detecting and locating grid faults for 45 years.
Nortroll's LineTroll series of fault channel indicators detect short circuits and ground faults on overhead lines. These battery-powered devices are mounted on utility poles and continuously monitor line voltage and current, sounding an alarm when a line fault occurs.
Nortroll’s most advanced fault channel indicator, the LineTroll R400D, goes a step further, leveraging its integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) module for reliable positioning and optional time synchronization. The LineTroll R400D accelerates remote fault detection by issuing time-stamped alarms with accurate location information, allowing grid engineers to quickly locate faults and expedite repairs.

Integrating positioning capabilities usually requires Rich
RF expertise
Nortroll has become an expert in electrical network fault detection. By integrating satellite positioning technology into its products, the company saw an opportunity to expand product functionality and drive innovation in this field.
Typically, deploying a good GNSS solution requires deep radio frequency (RF) knowledge and a lot of development work, as antenna selection and implementation ultimately have a significant impact on GNSS performance. Therefore, Nortroll was looking for a supplier that could provide a reliable, low-power, turnkey positioning solution that did not require in-house RF expertise.
How do we help customers solve problems?
As early as 2017, Nortroll had already found u-blox modules with integrated GNSS antennas. Now, Nortroll has adopted the latest GNSS technology from u-blox in its LineTroll R400D: the u-blox SAM-M10Q antenna module.
The SAM-M10Q can simultaneously receive satellite signals from all major GNSS constellations, providing maximum position availability and ensuring excellent sensitivity and fast signal acquisition time even in challenging signal environments. The powerful RF front-end design integrates front-end SAW filters and low-noise amplifiers, with excellent out-of-band anti-interference capabilities, so there is no need to worry about signal interference even if there is a cellular modem nearby. The SAM-M10Q GNSS solution measures 15.5×15.5×6.3 mm, making it ideal for devices with size constraints.
Without compromising GNSS performance, the SAM-M10Q antenna module consumes less than 37mW of power, which is superior to similar products on the market.
SAM-M10Q
u-blox's ultra-low power smart antenna modules can be easily and reliably integrated. In addition, the solution also has the following advantages:
-
The SAM-M10Q module is designed for the LineTroll R400D product line due to its compact size , integrated GNSS antenna and robust RF architecture.
-
The module's ultra-low power consumption extends the device's battery life and reduces maintenance workload.
-
The precise positioning performance achieved through simultaneous reception of the GNSS constellation enables Nortroll’s customers to quickly locate faults in their power networks.

Customer-centric solutions
Easy to integrate, safe and reliable
For Nortroll, the u-blox positioning module already had integrated antenna design and verified optimal performance, which significantly reduced the development work required to integrate positioning functionality into the LineTroll R400D.
The pin-compatibility of the SAM antenna module family reduces the effort required to migrate from u-blox's previous generation SAM-M8Q antenna modules to the new ultra-low power SAM-M10Q solution. Leveraging the advanced u-blox M10 positioning technology, Nortroll has not only improved positioning performance but also reduced power consumption.
Nortroll has chosen u-blox antenna modules for their features such as embedded antennas, reliability and ease of use as a turnkey GNSS solution.
