TSMC's new factory was forced to stop production
On June 17, TSMC planned to build two CoWoS advanced packaging plants in the Chiayi Science Park. The first CoWoS plant started construction in May to carry out geological exploration work, but construction has been suspended on site because suspected cultural relics were found at the construction site in early June.
Relevant departments in Chiayi County stated that after receiving information that ruins were suspected to have been excavated at the TSMC construction site, they are currently conducting on-site inspections in accordance with regulations.
The Southern Science Park Administration confirmed that suspected remains were excavated at TSMC's first CoWoS plant built in the Chiayi Science Park in early June. Construction has been suspended and a response strategy has been proposed. The P1 plant will be temporarily shut down while the P2 plant project will be started. The Southern Science Park Administration believes that the completion date will not be greatly affected.
People familiar with park development projects pointed out that it is not uncommon for various industries and science parks to excavate ruins during the development process. For example, there were many archaeological sites during the development of the South Science Park, and an archaeological museum was later established. For factory construction and development schedules, if the area is small, the impact will be minor, but if the area is large, it may affect the progress of factory construction and development.
TSMC's CoWoS advanced packaging products are still in short supply. Nvidia AI GPU accounts for about 80% of the global market share. Research firm TrendForce pointed out that TSMC's CoWoS monthly production capacity is expected to reach 40,000 pieces in 2024, and will further double by the end of next year. However, with the launch of Nvidia B100 and B200 chips, the area of the monolithic silicon interposer has increased, resulting in a decrease in production capacity, and CoWoS production capacity continues to be in short supply.
