Regulation (EU) 2023/1669, published in September 2023, requires smartphones and tablets sold in the EU to be labeled with an EEI (Energy Efficiency Index) from June 20, 2025. Annex II of the regulation specifies energy efficiency classes and EEI requirements, while Annex IV outlines the measurement and calculation methods.
Similar to the energy efficiency labels for household appliances, the latest EU regulations require that all smartphones and tablets be affixed with EEI labels. Therefore, before these products are put on the market, the corresponding EEI regulatory tests must be performed. Rohde & Schwarz (hereinafter referred to as "R&S") took the lead in cooperating with SmartViser, a test automation product provider, to develop a customized solution for testing whether smartphones and tablets comply with the new EU Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) label.
China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (hereinafter referred to as "CAICT") has completed EEI testing based on R&S equipment and SmartViser software, providing complete EEI regulatory testing capabilities.
The core of the solution is the R&S CMW500 wireless communication tester (the CMX500 One Box Tester wireless communication tester that supports both LTE and 5G NR can also be used), which supports end-to-end testing of signaling use cases and is combined with the SmartViser test automation application for Android and iOS.
