New Rohde & Schwarz radome tester provides fast, accurate and economical production measurement solutions

The new radome tester QAR50 from Rohde & Schwarz is the ideal solution for measuring radomes and bumpers in production. The innovative design of the QAR50 is very cost-effective, can measure quickly and provide accurate and repeatable measurement results. The highly modular software enables the QAR50 to adapt to the user's individual needs.


Munich, Germany – Advanced driver assistance functions require automotive radar sensors. For design reasons, the sensors are usually installed behind the bumper or the logo. Experience gained with the R&S QAR has shown that the quality of the radome depends largely on the transmission loss, reflectivity and homogeneity of the component under test.

QAR and QAR50 use microwave imaging, which has many advantages over traditional non-focused single-point measurements. Especially in production, simple and reliable operation and fast measurement are particularly important. The user-friendly interface of QAR50 simplifies the measurement operation in the automotive radar band, even for users without detailed RF knowledge. Multiple optimizations make the measurement time much less than 5 seconds, thus greatly shortening the production cycle.



This imaging method also provides information on whether the component under test is installed in the correct position. Single-point measurement only shows the reflectivity frequency response at a specific point, while the tester shows the spatial distribution of the reflectivity. Tracking the point of maximum reflection provides information on the position of the component.


Since this approach allows the transmit and receive antennas to be located far apart without affecting the measurement results, the QAR50 provides more space for clamping and releasing the components under test. The distance of approximately 100 cm between the transmit and receive antenna arrays minimizes the mechanical forces required to position the components. This eliminates the need for robots, positioners and brackets, and the protective housing required for occupational safety is significantly smaller.


The modular software concept enables the QAR50 to be cost-effectively adapted to the specific requirements of vehicle manufacturers. Depending on the software configuration, users can perform complete tests of transmission loss, transmission phase, uniformity and reflectivity in both frequency and spatial domains. All software options can be purchased later, ensuring the long-term use of the QAR50 in end-of-line testing (EOL).
