People who often ride Beijing Subway Line 4 may have heard this joke: "The student who gets off Line 4 first loses, and those who hold on to the end are the best of the best."

Because along the way you will pass by more than ten universities, all of which are famous universities.

Although it is a joke, many subway stations like to use the names of universities as station names. For example, the Shenzhen Metro Line 6 branch line has officially opened to traffic, and "Shenzhen University of Technology Station" is named after the Shenzhen University of Technology, which is under construction.

On the other hand, most universities will also deliberately compete for subway stations. On the one hand, it is to facilitate students' travel. On the other hand, the naming of subway stations is also a promotion for the school.

Even in 2021, there was an incident in Xi'an where two universities "fought" over the naming of subway stations . At that time, the official website of Xi'an Metro released the preliminary naming information of related stations on Line 14. Among them, a station in the northern suburbs of Xi'an University City was temporarily named "Xi'an University of Technology". This station is very close to the main gate of Xi'an University of Technology and the south gate of Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, only about 200 meters away.

This immediately caused strong dissatisfaction from Shaanxi University of Science and Technology. In order to fight for the naming rights, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology communicated with the school leaders of Xi'an University of Technology twice and put forward some conditions.

Because the talks between the two universities broke down, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology asked its kindergartens to stop accepting children from Xi'an University of Technology from March 24.

Finally, after being severely criticized by the media and public opinion, the two universities shook hands and made peace, resolving the issue of the kindergarten not allowing children to enter the kindergarten. At the same time, the name of the subway station on Xi'an Metro Line 14 was also changed to "Xi'an University of Technology Wude Road Station".

Although it is just a small matter, it is not the first time that universities have competed for the naming of subway stations. Sometimes, the subway authorities will be fair and list everyone's school names.

For example, Northwest University of Engineering and Technology ● Northwest University of Science and Technology (Lintong Campus) Station

Nanjing Medical University Jiangsu University of Economics and Business Station etc.

But there are exceptions to everything. There are some schools that want to keep the subway "away" from them, and some scholars have written papers to prove their reasons.

This may really be the university in China that "hates" the subway the most .

Things about the subway and Peking University

In 2018, a train on Beijing Subway Line 4 roared through the ground 13.5 meters deep. 100 meters away, in the building of the School of Information Science and Technology of Peking University, an electron microscope "seemed to have a hurricane blowing"

To the naked eye, this meter-high white metal tube stands steadily on the table. However, when it is adjusted to the highest precision, it is found that the black and white image on the display has "burrs", and the atomic pattern that was originally clear has become blurred due to vibration.

On the Peking University campus, the precision instruments affected by the subway operation are far more than this electron microscope worth millions of yuan. When Line 4 was opened, Peking University had precision instruments worth 1.1 billion yuan, of which 400 million yuan were affected.

The reason is simple - traffic micro-vibration. Although this vibration is hardly noticeable, for the precision instruments in colleges and universities, the subway almost means a "catastrophic blow". Lei Jun, director of the Environmental Vibration Monitoring and Evaluation Laboratory of Peking University, once carried a seismograph with his students to measure many subway lines in Beijing. They found that in the low-frequency range where precision instruments are more sensitive, the surface vibration intensity within 100 meters of the subway is 30 to 100 times higher than when there is no train passing.

Many instrument users are not aware that subway vibrations can affect their instruments. A colleague once approached Lei Jun to complain that a precision instrument used to measure rock age in the lab suddenly became abnormal. The teacher called the manufacturer, but after adjusting it here and there, it still couldn't be fixed, and the manufacturer was also at a loss.

In fact, it was not that the instrument was broken, but that the vibration after the opening of Metro Line 4 interfered with the instrument.

In fact, after the Metro Line 4 was planned, Peking University and the subway company had repeatedly argued over the two plans.

● Peking University refuses to allow Metro Line 4 to pass through and wants the metro line to be changed.
The subway company said that Peking University could also be moved away as a whole.

The two sides remained deadlocked until the last seminar, which was chaired by a vice mayor of Beijing and attended by an academician and several experts from outside Peking University.

Finally, a compromise was adopted. The 789-meter track section of Line 4 passing through Peking University will use the world's most advanced track vibration reduction technology , that is, laying a steel spring floating plate under the rails. This floating plate was invented by a German company. It is a reinforced concrete plate about 50 centimeters thick on top and supported by steel springs below, which can isolate the vibration of the train from the track bed.

In the end, Peking University made a compromise, which led to the establishment of [Peking University East Gate Station].

However, after Line 4 was actually opened, Peking University scholars found that although track vibration reduction was effective, it was not completely effective, and many precision instruments would still be affected.

Finally, Peking University decided to build a comprehensive research building at the old site of the school hospital in the southwest, which was least affected by the subway vibration, and move some of the affected instruments there. Before this, many researchers had to choose to operate precision instruments late at night when the subway stopped in order to conduct experiments normally.

Who would have thought that one crisis would come after another? The foundation of the Peking University Comprehensive Research Building had just been laid and construction was underway when the plan for Beijing Metro Line 16 came out. Metro Line 16 will pass by the west gate of Peking University, just 200 meters away from the Comprehensive Research Building.

This time Peking University was really upset. Since there was nowhere to move the precision instruments on campus, Peking University began to protest strongly.

Later we learned that due to the success of Metro Line 4, the subway authorities thought that the vibration reduction was successful, and Peking University did not tell the subway authorities that it was planning to build a scientific research building to move equipment. This led to the planning of Metro Line 16, which passes by the west side of Peking University.

This time, Peking University struck again with a strong blow. First of all, thesis argumentation is indispensable .

The city of Beijing has also allocated tens of millions of yuan in special funds for this purpose, allowing everyone to come up with a reasonable solution, including subway track vibration reduction, redesigning the comprehensive scientific research building, considering installing vibration reduction platforms on the lower floors, and so on.

Finally, when neither side was willing to give in, the project came to an abrupt end. It is said that the leaders of Peking University and a city leader met at a meeting and shook hands. Subway Line 16 took a step back, bypassed more than 300 meters to the west, and dropped two stations. Peking University no longer made any demands.

In this way, the confrontation between Peking University and the subway ended with both sides calling off the battle.

The confrontation between colleges and subways

However, Peking University is by no means an isolated case of confrontation between universities and subways.

Tsinghua University is similar to Peking University, but it is a little tougher when it comes to rejection.

As early as 1955, Tsinghua University had asked for the railway to be rerouted. At that time, the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway was located on the same side of the Tsinghua campus, and the vibration seriously interfered with scientific research. With the efforts of Tsinghua, the railway line was moved 800 meters to the east.

Later, the original plan for Metro Line 15 to pass under Tsinghua University was met with strong opposition from Tsinghua University. In the end, Line 15 only entered the Tsinghua campus for 120 meters and did not connect with Line 4 to form a transfer station.

Other universities affected by the subway include Fudan University, Nanjing University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Capital Medical University, and Zhengzhou University School of Medicine.

However, not all universities have strong negotiation skills. After all, once a subway line plan has been completed, it is almost impossible to move it.

Therefore, some 985 universities did not think too much and directly stamped the consent documents. Some universities suffered losses but were unwilling to make them public.

China Electronics Engineering Design Institute Co., Ltd. once stated that it had developed vibration reduction plans for many universities affected by the subway, including Fudan University and Nanjing University.

I didn't expect that a small vibration could cause such a big vortex. This may be the "subway butterfly effect"~
