JD.com announces Zhang Chen’s resignation as CTO and will serve as group consultant

This afternoon, JD.com announced that Zhang Chen, the former chief technology officer (CTO) of JD.com, will step down as the chief technology officer (CTO) of JD.com due to family reasons and will live overseas for a long time. He will also serve as a consultant to the group from June 30, 2019. JD.com will announce relevant succession plans in the future.
JD Group said: "We are very grateful to Zhang Chen for his outstanding contribution to the group and his leadership of the R&D team since he joined JD. We hope that he will continue to promote the development of JD.com's technology in his new role and wish him and his family all the best. JD.com will also continue to expand its technology leaders to further strengthen JD.com's R&D capabilities."
Zhang Chen said: "I am proud to have been a member of the decision-making team of JD Group in the past, and I am honored to serve as the chief technology officer during JD's transformation and growth. Due to personal and family planning considerations, I regret that I can no longer work full-time in China, but I am still very happy to continue to support JD's development as a consultant to the group."

* Zhang Chen was formerly the global vice president of Yahoo and the founder and president of Yahoo Beijing Global R&D Center.
* Prior to joining JD.com, Zhang Chen served as the president of Yahoo Beijing Global R&D Center for 18 years, responsible for advertising and personalized products, mobile platform and application development, cloud computing and other R&D work. He once led the development of Yahoo Messenger.
* On March 31, 2015, Zhang Chen officially joined JD.com as senior vice president of JD.com Group, responsible for the technology research and development system of JD.com Mall.
* Half a year after Zhang Chen joined JD.com, he was appointed as the company's chief technology officer.
It is reported that before Zhang Chen took office, the position of Chief Technology Officer had been idle for nearly three years within JD.com. In recent years, technology investment has gradually become the focus of JD.com. In 2018, JD.com's technology investment reached 12.1 billion yuan, an increase of 82.6% year-on-year. This may have a certain impact on the changes in the technical executive team. It is understood that in 2017, JD.com established "comprehensive technological transformation" as the strategic direction of JD.com Group for the next twelve years.
