Report from Leiphone.com (leiphone-sz)
From the perspective of the development of the mobile communications industry, 2019 will undoubtedly be the first year of 5G.
After a lot of preparations in 2018, the upcoming MWC 2019 (Mobile World Congress, held from February 25 to February 28, 2019, at the Fira De barcelona Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain) will undoubtedly become a stage for many communication equipment manufacturers, chip manufacturers and operators to demonstrate their 5G strength and progress. It is also a good opportunity for mobile phone manufacturers to release new phones (or show off their muscles); and at present, many related manufacturers have announced relevant developments around MWC 2019.
Therefore, before MWC 2019 officially begins, Leifeng.com will also take you to see what are the highlights of this MWC.
Smartphones: Folding screens are on the rise, and major manufacturers are competing to make them
As the largest event in the global mobile communications industry, MWC has always been a stage for smartphone manufacturers to compete with each other. At MWC 2019, Samsung, Huawei and other major manufacturers will showcase their folding screen phones, which has made folding screens a trend; at the same time, many manufacturers will also use 5G, multi-camera, TOF, and AI as product highlights to try to attract the industry's attention. This year's MWC is destined to be a carnival for mobile phone manufacturers.
Samsung: S10 first, foldable screen later
Exhibition location: Hall 3 Stand 3I10
Last year, Samsung chose to release its first half flagship smartphone Galaxy S9 series at MWC 2018; this year, Samsung made some adjustments and scheduled the launch of the next-generation flagship S10 before the official opening of MWC.
Samsung Mobile has released a 15-second trailer titled "The Future Unfolds" on its official Twitter account, and the "10" in the trailer refers to the S10. From the information in the video, the S10 will be released on February 20, 2019, and a foldable screen product will also be unveiled. More information shows that the launch event will be held in San Francisco, USA at 3 a.m. on February 21, Beijing time.
Given the star status of Samsung S10 in the industry, a lot of information about the S10 series has been exposed online. From the version point of view, this year's S10 series has three models, namely S10 E, S10 and S10+; they all adopt a full-screen design with narrower upper and lower borders, and the front camera is solved by a hole in the upper right corner. Among them, S10+ has a front dual camera, while S10 and S10+ will use a rear triple camera, and S10 E will use the latter dual camera.
In terms of configuration, the Samsung S10 series will undoubtedly use Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 or Samsung's own Exynos 9820 chip. In terms of memory and storage, the S10 E is 6+128 GB, the S10 and S10+ are both 8+128 GB, and the top configuration of the S10+ may be a combination of 12 +1TB. In terms of battery, the S10 series will provide large-capacity batteries and even support 9W wireless reverse charging.
In addition, at Samsung's press conference this time, we need to pay attention to what form Samsung will release its foldable screen mobile phone. Previously at SDC 2018, Samsung has demonstrated a prototype equipped with Infinity Flex Display, which can be folded in half like a book, and the size and style of the screen display will change accordingly.
More information about the Samsung S10 series and full-screen mobile phones has yet to be revealed by Samsung itself - and it is very likely that the new phones released by Samsung will be unveiled at the MWC 2019 booth.
Huawei: Competing with Samsung, focusing on foldable screens
Exhibition Location: Hall 1 Stand 1H100 & Hall 1 Stand 1H50 & Hall 7 Stand 7C21 & Hall 7 Stand 7C31 & Hall 1 Stand OA1A.10 & Hall 1 Stand OA1.28 & Hall 5 Stand OA5.3 & Hall 4 Stand 4A30 & Hall 2 Stand 2J2Ex & Hall 8.1 Stand CC8.17 & Hall 8.1 Stand CC8.17
As a frequent visitor to MWC, Huawei naturally cannot be absent. In fact, as early as January 24, 2019, Huawei held a 5G press conference and MWC 2019 pre-communication meeting.
As far as mobile phones are concerned, it is currently confirmed that Huawei will announce a foldable screen smartphone product at MWC. Regarding foldable screen phones, Huawei Consumer Business CEO Yu Chengdong has also announced its existence on multiple occasions, but this product has never been publicly unveiled. It is worth mentioning that Huawei has submitted a batch of trademark applications in 2018, including names such as Mate Flex and Mate F.
However, it is unlikely that Huawei's new P series flagship product (most likely named P30) will appear at MWC 2019. In fact, last year Huawei's P20 series was launched in March instead of MWC, and this year is likely to follow this example.
Xiaomi: Bringing the Mi 9 to the International Stage
Exhibition location: Hall 3 Stand 3D10
As Xiaomi deepens its presence in Europe, MWC 2019 has naturally become a big stage for Xiaomi to showcase its internationalization process.
On February 13, the ninth day of the Chinese New Year, Xiaomi officially announced its flagship product, Xiaomi Mi 9, and announced its brand ambassador, Wang Yuan, a member of the TFBOYS band. From the posters, Xiaomi Mi 9 will have three rear cameras and no rear fingerprint recognition. Xiaomi officials said that Xiaomi Mi 9 is "the flagship of the year with super powerful performance, and the best-looking Xiaomi phone so far", and the launch conference is scheduled for February 20.
According to reports, the Xiaomi Mi 9's rear triple camera includes a 48-megapixel main camera + a 12-megapixel secondary camera + a 3D TOF camera, and the main camera configuration has been confirmed by Xiaomi Senior Vice President Wang Chuan. Not only that, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has also posted a real shot of the Xiaomi Mi 9 holographic fantasy blue version.
Of course, in addition to the press conference on February 20, Xiaomi has also announced that it will participate in MWC 2019 and will release new products before the show on February 24. If nothing unexpected happens, this new product is likely to be the Xiaomi Mi 9. At the same time, there are also reports that Xiaomi is expected to display the 5G version of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 phone at MWC, and the phone will most likely be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with a built-in Snapdragon X50 baseband.
OPPO: 10x hybrid optical zoom + optical screen fingerprint
Exhibition location: Hall 2 Stand 2F9Ex

In fact, as early as January this year, many media outlets, including Leifeng.com, have received invitations from OPPO, which show that OPPO will hold an innovation conference in Barcelona, Spain on February 23, 2019. It can be seen that OPPO will take advantage of the popularity of MWC 2019 to show its strength.
Leifeng.com learned that OPPO actually held a technical communication meeting in Beijing on January 16 this year.
At the conference, OPPO released a 10x hybrid optical zoom technology. This technology uses a three-camera solution of "ultra-wide-angle + ultra-clear main camera + telephoto". The ultra-wide-angle camera has an equivalent focal length of 15.9mm, which brings a wide-angle field of view; the ultra-clear main camera can ensure the level of photo quality; and the telephoto camera with an equivalent focal length of 159mm, with the original "periscope structure", supports high-magnification zoom, which can achieve farther and clearer shots - through three cameras, 10x zoom is achieved together.
In addition, OPPO has also released a new optical screen fingerprint technology, whose effective recognition area is 15 times that of the current mainstream optical solution. Users can unlock or pay with fingerprints by tapping anywhere in the entire area. In addition, the optical screen fingerprint supports a unique "black screen blind operation" function, which can be unlocked immediately by touching the screen in black screen state; it also supports dual-finger simultaneous entry and authentication functions, which can greatly improve security and increase gameplay, such as entering two people's fingerprints at the same time to open an App.
Leiphone.com (official account: Leiphone.com) will continue to pay attention to OPPO's more actions at MWC 2019.
vivo: APEX 2019 makes its grand debut
At MWC 2018, vivo amazed the world with its vivo APEX screen phone. Its nearly 100% screen-to-body ratio, lifting front camera, hidden earpiece and sensors shocked the entire industry - some media commented that this is the mobile phone of the future.

At present, HMD will launch several new smartphones. The most interesting one is the five-camera flagship Nokia 9 Pureview, which has been leaked many times before. In addition, the rumored Nokia 8.1 Plus and other models may also be unveiled.
5G terminal chips: Qualcomm, Huawei and other players compete for the market
From the perspective of 5G and the development of the smartphone industry, 5G chips for mobile terminals can be said to be a key link. From this perspective, Qualcomm is undoubtedly the first to start and the closest to the actual landing; but in 2018, Huawei, Intel, Samsung, and MediaTek were not far behind and launched their own baseband chips. Therefore, this field is also a battleground for many players and will definitely become a highlight of MWC 2019.
Huawei: Balong 5000 attempts to compete with Qualcomm
Although it has been boycotted in many countries around the world, Huawei has not slowed down its 5G steps. At MWC 2018, Huawei released a full range of end-to-end 5G product solutions based on 3GPP standards. The so-called end-to-end refers to the entire 5G product chain covering core network, transmission, sites, and even baseband and terminals. This year, Huawei will definitely focus on the implementation of 5G.
On January 24 this year, Huawei held a 5G press conference and MWC 2019 pre-communication meeting. This was also the first joint press conference of Huawei's Carrier BG and Consumer BG, highlighting Huawei's end-to-end 5G capabilities.
First, from the operator level, Huawei released the world's first 5G base station core chip - Huawei Tiangang, and also released blade-type 5G equipment, including blade-type 5G microwave, blade-type 5G AAU, and blade-type 5G base station, so that customers can build 5G facilities like building blocks. In short, this chip has brought revolutionary improvements to AAU, reducing the size of base stations by more than 50%, reducing weight by 23%, saving power by 21%, and saving half the installation time compared to standard 4G base stations, effectively solving challenges such as difficult site acquisition and high costs.
From the consumer perspective, Huawei Consumer Business CEO Richard Yu released the world's fastest 5G multi-mode terminal chip Balong 5000 and commercial terminals. Huawei said that the world's strongest 5G modem Balong 5000 is the world's first 5G multi-mode modem, compatible with 2/3/4G networks, and the industry's first 5G chip that supports TDD/FDD full-band, bringing more than 2 times the rate increase and supporting Huawei HiLink protocol. Of course, the benchmark for Huawei Balong 5000 is Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 Modem.
There is no doubt that Huawei will showcase the latest 5G developments mentioned above at MWC 2019, and Leifeng.com will continue to pay attention.
Qualcomm: The earliest to start, the closest to landing
Exhibition location: Hall 3 Stand 3E10
In the field of 5G terminal chips, one thing we have to admit is that Qualcomm started the earliest and is closest to actual implementation.
Qualcomm released the Snapdragon X50 5G modem as early as October 2016, which was the world's first 5G modem. In October 2017, Qualcomm announced that this modem chipset completed the world's first 5G connection, and reached cooperation agreements with many operators and terminal manufacturers on the Snapdragon X50 5G chip in early February 2018. At MWC 2018, Qualcomm released a 5G module solution, which greatly reduced the threshold for mobile phone manufacturers to deploy 5G, with the aim of allowing smartphone manufacturers to quickly deploy 5G in 2019.
Throughout 2018, Qualcomm spared no effort in the commercialization of 5G, especially Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo have made a series of progress in 5G. On December 6, 2018, at the exhibition area of China Mobile's Global Partner Conference held in Guangzhou, 5G smartphone prototypes from Chinese OEM manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, and vivo made their grand debut. Under different brands and appearance designs, they have one thing in common - they are equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform, and successfully stepped onto the 5G stage through this platform.
Of course, the biggest highlight of Snapdragon 855 is still its perfect support for 5G networks. In terms of 5G, it can work with Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem series, and Qualcomm QTM052 millimeter wave antenna module that integrates RF transceiver, RF front end and antenna unit - thus helping many manufacturers release their 5G commercial terminals in 2019.
It is foreseeable that with the arrival of MWC 2019, Qualcomm will intensify its technological progress and industry cooperation in the commercialization of 5G, and it is very likely that more dynamics on the commercialization of 5G will be announced at MWC 2019. Considering Qualcomm's position in the mobile communications industry, this series of trends basically means that 5G will achieve initial commercialization in 2019.
Leifeng.com will keep a close eye on Qualcomm's developments at MWC 2019.
Samsung: Self-developed baseband may be late, but it will not be absent
At MWC 2018, perhaps the S9/S9+ launch conference was too eye-catching, and Samsung's accumulation and progress in 5G were even drowned out. In fact, Samsung not only released a set of 5G FWA certified by the US FCC at MWC 2018, but also stated that it had successfully developed the first commercial 5G modem and millimeter wave RFIC (radio frequency integrated circuit) based on ASIC.
This year, Samsung chose to keep the S10 out of MWC, possibly in order to highlight its 5G progress during MWC 2019.
Leifeng.com learned that as early as August 2018, Samsung officially released a 5G baseband model named Exynos Modem 5100 on its official website. Samsung claims that this baseband chip fully complies with the 5G standards specified by 3GPP. It uses Samsung's own 10nm process. In addition to 5G networks, it also supports 2G/3G/4G network standards such as GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, and LTE. Therefore, Exynos Modem 5100 is an all-round all-network 5G baseband, which is in line with Samsung's terminal strategy.
The advantage of Samsung's self-developed 5G baseband is that it can launch 5G products according to its own product rhythm, with strong autonomy. Samsung has previously announced that it will launch its first 5G mobile phone in the first half of 2019, which is worth paying attention to.
Intel: In addition to 5G, a series of products will be unveiled
Exhibition location: Hall 4YFN Montjuic Hall M8 Stand F4
Relatively speaking, Intel is a follower in 5G, but with its own efforts in many aspects, it can no longer be underestimated. In 2018, Intel first showed off its 5G skills at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, and then booked the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in advance; at MWC 2018, Intel started with 5G PCs and demonstrated a two-in-one PC device that can be connected through an early 5G modem.
In November 2018, Intel released the XMM 8160, a multi-mode modem optimized for providing 5G connectivity for devices such as smartphones, PCs, and broadband access gateways. The modem will support peak rates of up to 6Gbps.
Technically speaking, the XMM 8160 is a multi-mode modem that can support 5G New Radio (NR) standards including standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes on a single chip. This means that there is no need for two independent modems to connect to 5G and 4G/3G/2G networks respectively. The integrated multi-mode solution supports dual connectivity (EN-DC) of LTE and 5G, ensuring that mobile devices are backward compatible with 4G in the absence of a 5G network.
Intel said the modem will be shipped in the second half of 2019, but commercial devices using this modem, including mobile phones, PCs, and broadband access gateways, are expected to be available in the first half of 2020. It can be seen that Intel is not in a hurry to get to 5G. And considering its partnership with Apple iPhone, this also means that, at least in 2019, Apple may not be so enthusiastic about 5G - of course, this is understandable.
Compared with last year, Intel has not promoted its participation in MWC 2019 as much. However, according to foreign media reports, Intel and Ericsson have cooperated to develop a software and hardware management platform for 5G, network function virtualization (NFV) and distributed cloud, which will be unveiled at MWC.
In addition, according to Intel, Intel will showcase industrial manufacturing, immersive media experience, unlimited retail deployment and other aspects at MWC 2019, and Intel's own Xeon processors, FGPA, Atom series processors and some connection products will be on display at the Intel booth from February 25 to February 28.
MediaTek: Helio M70 5G baseband becomes a highlight
Exhibition location: Hall 6 Stand 6C30
Although it has lost ground in high-end smartphone chips, MediaTek has not given up on 5G baseband chips. As early as June 2018, MediaTek announced the Helio M70 5G baseband at the Taipei Computer Show, and then in December 2018, MediaTek announced the detailed information of Helio M70.
MediaTek Helio M70 (model MT6297) is manufactured using TSMC's 7nm process. It is a 5G multi-mode integrated baseband that supports 2G/3G/4G/5G at the same time. It fully supports multiple 4G frequency bands, which can simplify terminal design. Combined with the overall power management planning, it can greatly reduce power consumption. It supports 5G NR (new air interface), supports independent networking (SA) and non-independent networking (NSA), supports sub-6GHz frequency bands, high-power terminals (HPUE) and other 5G key technologies, complies with the latest 3GPP Release 15 standard specifications, and has a maximum transmission rate of 5Gbps.
Obviously, MediaTek will display this 5G baseband chip at the booth of MWC 2019, and it is even possible to exhibit a prototype based on it, which is worth paying attention to.
Cloud computing: The world's top four vendors are here
With the advent of the 5G era, the relationship between mobile communications and cloud computing has become closer, so some cloud computing vendors have also appeared on the MWC stage. Among them, Alibaba Cloud, which is relatively active, is Alibaba. However, more and more cloud computing vendors that are interested in internationalization have realized the importance of MWC. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and other major vendors have also not been absent from the MWC 2019 booth, which is worth paying attention to.
