On February 24, 2019, Huawei's first 5G foldable phone, HUAWEI Mate X , was finally officially unveiled in Barcelona, Spain, amid much anticipation. The phone is 8 inches in size and folds outwards asymmetrically.
According to Huawei Consumer Business CEO Yu Chengdong's on-site introduction, the price of this phone is 2299 euros (about 17498 yuan) and is expected to be released to the public in June this year.
No matter how powerful Huawei was in the past, there were always people saying that it could not compete with Apple or Samsung.
Some people used to say that Huawei’s flagship phones only surpass Apple and Samsung in certain aspects.
This time the style has changed, and netizens exclaimed: Huawei phones are really going to beat Apple and Samsung!
Some even commented that Apple went from lagging by one year to lagging by two years overnight! Should Buffett consider clearing out his Apple stock?
Without further ado, let’s take a look at this new Huawei phone that makes Chinese people proud, as shown in the picture above.
Let's take a quick look at the hardware configuration:
8-inch OLED foldable display
When folded, the main screen is 6.6 inches and the back display is 6.4 inches
Kirin 980 processor + Balong 5000 baseband
8GB RAM + 512GB storage space
Can be opened from 0° to 180°
Battery capacity 4500mAh
Support SuperCharge 55W flash charging
Side fingerprint recognition
Leica triple camera
Huawei Mate X is equipped with an 8-inch OLED foldable display (screen ratio 8:7.1, resolution 2480*2200), and the hinge adopts an outward folding solution.
When folded, the main screen of the phone is 6.6 inches, with a screen ratio of 19.5:9 and a resolution of 2480*1148; the display on the back is 6.4 inches, with a screen ratio of 25:9 and a resolution of 2480*892.
When the phone is unfolded, the thinnest single side thickness of Mate X is only 5.4mm. When folded, the body thickness is only 11mm, which is slightly thicker than the current candy-bar flagship phone.
This time, Huawei Mate X adopts an external folding solution, which Huawei internally calls the "Falcon Wing" design.
One of the biggest difficulties in folding screen phones is the hinge at the bend. Yu Chengdong said that Huawei adopted an eagle-wing design, and it took the R&D staff three years to overcome this problem. "The design of the hinge is very complicated. We have to achieve true back-to-back folding with no gap in the middle. This is actually very challenging, because when it is bent, the screen inside will be longer, but we can make it very flat. There are more than 100 parts in the hinge."
It is reported that the Mate X, positioned as a super flagship model, triggered waves of enthusiastic cheers at the scene. The launch site built in the famous Spanish Square was like a black technology show, with reporters from all over the world queuing up. An hour before the opening, a long queue had already formed at the door.
Folding screen debut
Everyone came here for the reputation of the "5G folding screen".
The biggest feature of this foldable phone is the "eagle-wing folding design", that is, the two screens are folded inwards and facing outwards. Compared with Samsung's 7.3 inches, this phone is 8 inches in size when the screen is fully unfolded, and a 6.6-inch large-screen phone when closed. The thickness when unfolded is only 5.4 mm.
Huawei Consumer Business CEO Richard Yu said that the key to the eagle-wing folding design is the use of hinge technology. The hinge system can seamlessly support the screen and fold, achieving a seamless performance when unfolded and a tight fit when closed. In fact, in the era of folding screens, the hinge technology used by each company and the way to achieve folding screens are the characteristics and highlights of each mobile phone.
The real “5G”
The biggest highlight of this MWC, in addition to the foldable screen, is the official commercialization of 5G. When experiencing 5G life, the first application scenario that people will feel the most deeply will be smartphones.
In terms of hardware configuration, Huawei Mate X supports 5G networks and is backward compatible with 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. The built-in baseband is Balong 5000, which can achieve a peak download rate of 5Gbps, which is 10 times the rate that can be experienced by 4G LTE.
Through the smart dual-SIM design, the phone can support both 4G and 5G, and also integrates 4 sets of 5G antennas that integrate many cutting-edge technologies into the foldable body. Huawei proudly pointed out that there is no need to change the phone when the operator switches to SA networking, which means this is a "real" 5G phone.
Besides 5G and foldable screens, what other surprises are there?
The flash charging function is a highlight of Huawei Mate X.
Multi-screen mobile phones have higher requirements for batteries. The flash charging function of Mate X can fully charge 85% of the battery in 30 minutes. We can expect that the flagship model P30 to be launched in April will also have such a function. Yu Chengdong joked on the spot that you can even use this charger to charge your iPhone, and it works just as well.
Another thoughtful feature is the seamless transmission between mobile phones and laptops: as long as you place the phone against the laptop, all kinds of videos, documents, and even a piece of text you just copied can be quickly and directly transferred to another device via the NFC chip.
It is worth mentioning that in response to this "super flagship model", Huawei has designed a textured and adaptable protective shell for its multi-screen folding features. This design triggered a round of applause when it was demonstrated on site.
A more intense global competition
When Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, Motorola, Apple, Xiaomi and other major manufacturers are competing to enter the foldable phone market, they must win by surprise. OPPO is betting on the 10x lossless zoom camera function, which can still achieve clear image quality even in long-distance shooting scenes. Huawei's idea is to launch foldable screen phones on the one hand, and achieve 85% ultra-fast flash charging in 30 minutes on the other hand, and the charger can also be used for your iPhone and other mobile phones.
As smartphones continue to keep pace with the times and advance, and amid the rise of many competitors and fierce market competition, they have inspired a variety of novel, thoughtful and sophisticated functions, and the details of life that smartphones satisfy are becoming increasingly rich.
Each R&D team competes with each other in terms of brainpower, creativity, and practicality to make consumers pay for their products. This trend is exciting for users.
On the other hand, whether the foldable screen can be successfully developed depends on whether the technology can be mature enough to reduce costs and gain consumer acceptance. This in turn determines whether the foldable screen will change the form of various devices such as tablets, notebooks, mobile phones, smart watches, etc. in the future and bring a new experience. The future trend is worth waiting for.
However, it must be said that Huawei did rely on its comprehensive R&D advantages in end, pipe and cloud, and won a good battle at MWC from 5G equipment, 5G chips, 5G mobile phones, and even the launch of foldable screen mobile phones.
