China's memory layout: Fujian Jinhua, Hefei Changxin and Tsinghua Unigroup form three major camps
China's semiconductor industry is booming. Considering the market and national security, memory has become a key development project in China. According to the latest "In-depth Analysis of China's Semiconductor Industry" report by TrendForce, a global market research organization, as China's huge funds and local government resources enter the memory field of semiconductors, three major camps have taken shape in China, including Fujian Jinhua, Hefei Changxin and Tsinghua Unigroup.
TrendForce points out that despite the failure of early technical cooperation negotiations between Tsinghua Unigroup and Micron, or the failure of mergers and acquisitions of related technology manufacturers, China has actively absorbed professional talents, whether they are factory construction talents in Taiwan or technical talents in Japan and South Korea, all of which are the targets of Chinese semiconductor factories. In addition, China has shifted from technology licensing to independent research and development, and its strong determination to enter the memory industry can be seen everywhere.
Two major camps are competing to develop DRAM, starting with niche memory and mobile memory respectively
From the perspective of the DRAM industry in memory products, China has gradually converged in its development strategy, and it is not chaotic. From the perspective of technology layout, in the Chinese DRAM field, except for graphics memory, there are no manufacturers in place, and all other manufacturers are developing according to plan.
China's DRAM industry currently has two major camps: Fujian Jinhua and Hefei Changxin. Fujian Jinhua focuses on the development of niche memory and focuses on the consumer electronics market. It is expected to expand its own production capacity by relying on China's huge domestic demand market. Even under the subsidy policy, it is estimated that it may affect the sales strategies of international manufacturers in the Chinese market as early as the end of 2018, and have the opportunity to obtain technical IP to enter the international market.
Compared to Fujian Jinhua avoiding the main products of international manufacturers, Hefei Changxin directly hits the core mobile memory products of international manufacturers. Mobile memory has the highest proportion of products in the memory category, and its power-saving technology requirements are extremely high, and the development difficulty is quite high. However, Chinese brand mobile phone shipments have accounted for more than 40% of the world. If LPDDR4 can be successfully mass-produced and cooperate with the subsidy policy, the Chinese government's import substitution strategy can complete part of the phased task.
Yangtze Memory Technologies has the fastest NAND Flash deployment, but its initial products are still targeted at low-end products
Observing the development of China in the field of NAND Flash, Yangtze Memory Technologies, a subsidiary of Tsinghua Unigroup, is the fastest-growing developer in China. In the early stage, it will focus on the layout of the Chinese domestic market. Due to the lack of technical strength in the early stage of Yangtze Memory Technologies, it is difficult to compete with first-tier manufacturers. It is estimated that its initial products will be mainly card-disk products. With the development of Yangtze Memory Technologies to 64/96 layers, it will have the opportunity to enter the SSD market. However, the technical competition in this market is quite fierce. Without the support of the Chinese government, it will be difficult to gain cost advantages in the short term. Taking advantage of the Chinese domestic market to expand itself will be a feasible strategy for Tsinghua Unigroup in the future.
With the establishment of Yangtze Memory Technologies, Wuhan XMC will focus on the development of NOR Flash. Although Yangtze Memory Technologies' NAND Flash pilot production line is temporarily placed in Wuhan XMC, after the construction of Yangtze Memory Technologies' base in Wuhan Future City is completed, they will become independent in the future.
TrendForce points out that, judging from the current situation, the next three to five years will be a critical period for the success of China's memory development strategy, especially in terms of strengthening IP layout. In the future, the Chinese government and manufacturers must rely on the domestic market, excellent development capabilities, and international-level production capacity to obtain the most favorable bargaining chips with international manufacturers in order to have a chance to gain a foothold in the world.
