In the era of fast charging for everything, in order to meet the demand for USB PD3.1 fast charging, WPG World Peace Group launched a solution based on ON Semiconductor NCP1680+NCP1345 2SW Flyback for 240W USB PD3.1. The totem pole PFC+ 2SW quasi-resonant flyback topology significantly improves efficiency and accurately uses the output current limiting circuit on the primary side to ensure constant output current limit.
On October 15, 2024 , WPG Holdings, a leading semiconductor component distributor dedicated to the Asia Pacific market, announced
Its subsidiary World Peace launched a 240W USB PD charger solution based on ON Semiconductor’s NCP1680 and NCP1345 chips. ☜

The introduction of the USB PD3.1 protocol is a major innovation in the field of fast charging. It introduces the extended power range (EPR) in a breakthrough way, adding three voltage levels of 28V, 36V, and 48V, and corresponding to 5A current respectively, increasing the maximum output power to 240W. This upgrade indicates that fast charging technology will no longer be limited to traditional mobile phones, computers and other consumer electronic products, but will fully penetrate into home appliances, servers and various high-power electrical equipment, thus opening a new era where everything can be fast charged. In response to the demand for USB PD3.1 fast charging, WPG World Peace launched a 240W USB PD charger solution based on Onsemi NCP1680 and NCP1345 chips. The solution adopts the totem pole PFC+2SW quasi-resonant flyback topology, has multiple protection functions, and can provide excellent energy efficiency and safety.

The NCP1680 is a CrM PFC controller IC that drives a bridgeless totem pole PFC topology. The bridgeless totem pole PFC is a power factor correction structure that includes a fast switching bridge arm driven at the PWM switching frequency and a second bridge arm operating at the AC line frequency. This topology eliminates the diode bridge present at the input of the traditional PFC circuit, which significantly improves the efficiency of the power stage.
The NCP1345 is a highly integrated quasi-resonant flyback controller suitable for designing high-performance offline USB PD and USB Type-C power converters. The NCP1345 implements a dual-pin VCC structure that can be directly connected to the auxiliary winding, simplifying VCC management while reducing the number of parts and improving performance. In addition, the product also has a primary-side based output limiting circuit to ensure that the output current limit is maintained constant regardless of the output voltage or output power under any circumstances.

In addition, this solution is also equipped with Onsemi's synchronous rectification controller NCP4307 and GaN FET products to achieve the best efficiency performance. With the cutting-edge technology of WPG and Onsemi's advanced devices, this solution can not only speed up the product design of USB PD3.1 chargers, but also promote the upgrade and development of the entire fast charging ecosystem.
