To improve efficiency and reduce noise, system designers need to control the speed of cooling fans. This whiteboard shows a solution developed by Vicor applications engineer Syed Saqib to solve a customer problem that required controlling a large number of fans.
In this design, a pair of PRM and VTM are used to provide up to 230W from a 48 VDC supply with high efficiency ranging from 89.5% to 91.3% depending on fan speed . More importantly for this application, the PRM provides a simple method for dynamically controlling fan speed with up to 30Hz bandwidth.
The customer also required a compact, low-profile power system. This is provided by the Vicor VI Chip package, which means the power train only requires 1430 mm2 of board area.
Vicor Whiteboard allows you to experiment with your design and analyze its performance to ensure you have the best power chain for your application. You can visit Syed who developed the system : Click "Read Original" to open the fan array speed controller in Vicor online whiteboard.
