However, most developers still have a "love-hate" relationship with relays. "Love" is for its ultra-long service life, high-speed switching and high reliability, "hate" is for its high power consumption that makes people smack their teeth. In order to avoid the relay selection problem due to "power consumption index" during the development process, today we will introduce two "special" relays to you - Toshiba low-power relays TLP170AM and TLP170GM.
TLP170AM and TLP170GM are photorelays, a type of solid-state relay. They have many advantages. Let me tell you about them.
When the product is powered by a battery or has a high requirement for low power consumption, each device needs to be "power compressed" and reduced or replaced. Therefore, how to achieve low power consumption has always been a pain point for developers.
However, as a "power-hungry" device, the selection of relays has become a "pain in the pain".
The TLP170AM and TLP170GM have a maximum LED trigger current of 1mA, and reduce input power consumption by improving the sensitivity of the photodiode array. Using this photorelay for switch control in battery-powered security devices and various sensors can help reduce power consumption while extending the life of the equipment.
Battery-powered devices are basically handheld devices. The characteristic of handheld devices is that they are relatively small, and the size of the internal components is very high, which directly limits the PCB board inside the device. Therefore, it is difficult to place large components (such as mechanical relays) in general handheld devices. Both TLP170AM and TLP170GM use a small 4-pin SO6 package, which perfectly solves the problem of difficult PCB component layout due to limited internal space in handheld devices.
The working principle of electromagnetic relay is that the current passes through the coil to make the iron core become a magnetic magnet to attract the armature, so that the related contacts can control the on and off of the load, thereby achieving electrical isolation. TLP170AM and TLP170GM are photorelays, and their working principle is somewhat similar to that of optocouplers. They use the electric-optical-electrical signal transmission mode to achieve input-to-output control, while achieving electrical isolation, no contacts, and no mechanical wear, so they have an extremely long service life. It also has the characteristics of no vibration, no switching sound, etc. Its high insulation voltage (BV s ) = 3750Vrms (minimum value) is convenient for use in equipment that requires high insulation performance.
Automation equipment is constantly evolving to meet the needs of various production processes, including improving equipment availability, production efficiency, precision, safety, and energy saving. TLP170AM and TLP170GM relays are widely used in automation equipment as signal switching and switch control due to their low power consumption, fast response speed, and ultra-quiet characteristics.

In addition, TLP170AM and TLP170GM can also be used in various scenarios that need to replace mechanical relays, such as security systems, building automation systems, passive sensors and various sensor controls.
Toshiba has extensive technical experience in semiconductor R&D and design, and recently launched a new low trigger current photorelay that can meet the low power consumption requirements of battery-powered devices. When you need a low power relay, TLP170AM and TLP170GM will be a good choice.
