Renesas launches new RA0 series ultra-low power entry-level MCU [Copy link]

 

Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723), a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced the launch of the RA0 microcontroller (MCU) series based on the Arm Cortex-M23 processor. The new 32-bit general-purpose MCU RA0 series not only achieves lower costs, but also provides ultra-low power performance.

The RA0 product consumes only 84.3μA/MHz in working mode and only 0.82mA in sleep mode. In addition, Renesas also provides a software standby mode in this new MCU, which can further reduce power consumption by 99% to a minimum of 0.2μA. With the fast wake-up high-speed on-chip oscillator (HOCO), this ultra-low power MCU is an ideal solution for battery-powered consumer electronic devices, small appliances, industrial system control, and building automation applications.

Feature set optimized for low cost

Renesas has launched the first product group of the RA0 series: RA0E1. The feature set of this product is optimized for cost-sensitive applications and supports a wide operating voltage range of 1.6V to 5.5V, eliminating the need for level converters/regulators in 5V systems. The RA0 MCU also integrates timers, serial communications, as well as analog functions, security functions, and human-machine interface (HMI) functions to reduce customer BOM costs. In addition, the series offers a variety of packaging options, including a 3mm x 3mm tiny 16-pin QFN package.

The new MCU’s high-precision (±1.0%) on-chip oscillator (HOCO) improves baud rate accuracy, allowing designers to eliminate the need for a separate oscillator. And unlike other HOCOs, this accuracy is maintained over a -40°C to 105°C environment, a wide temperature range that eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming “fine-tuning” even after the reflow process.

The RA0E1 MCU not only has key diagnostic safety functions and an IEC60730 self-test library, but also provides a wealth of protection functions for data security, such as a true random number generator (TRNG) and an AES library, suitable for IoT applications including encryption.

Key Features of the RA0E1 MCU Group

  • Core : 32MHz Arm Cortex-M23

  • Storage : Up to 64KB of integrated code flash and 12KB of SRAM

  • Analog peripherals : 12-bit ADC, temperature sensor, internal reference voltage

  • Communication peripherals : 3 UARTs, 1 asynchronous UART, 3 simplified SPIs, 1 IIC, 3 simplified IICs

  • Functional safety : SRAM parity check, invalid memory access detection, frequency detection, A/D test, immutable storage, CRC calculator, register write protection

  • Data security : unique ID, TRNG, flash read protection

  • Packages : 16-, 24-, and 32-pin QFN, 20-pin LSSOP, 32-pin LQFP

The new RA0E1 product group MCUs are supported by the Renesas Flexible Software Package (FSP) . FSP brings all the infrastructure software needed, including multiple RTOS, BSP, peripheral drivers, middleware, connectivity, network and security stacks, as well as reference software for building complex AI, motor control and cloud solutions, thereby accelerating application development. It allows customers to integrate their existing code and selected RTOS with FSP to create full flexibility for application development. Customers can use FSP to easily migrate existing designs to larger RA series products according to their needs.
