New Product | Renesas Electronics Launches Ultra-Low Power ZMOD4510 Outdoor Air Quality Sensor Platform

Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced the expansion of its popular ZMOD4510 outdoor air quality (OAQ) gas sensor platform with the launch of the new enhanced ZMOD4510 with IP67-compliant waterproof packaging and new AI-based algorithms, enabling ultra-low power selectable ozone monitoring. The enhanced ZMOD4510 is the industry's first fully calibrated miniature digital OAQ sensor solution with selectable ozone monitoring, providing users with real-time visibility into the air quality in their environment to create a personalized experience.


Ozone is one of the major causes of poor outdoor air quality and health hazards. Based on Renesas' new ultra-low power firmware, the enhanced ZMOD4510 can detect specific ozone levels while ignoring other pollutants while keeping power consumption below 200uW. This selectable measurement function allows devices such as smart watches, mobile phones and smoke detectors to monitor harmful ozone gases commonly found outdoors - these gases can drift into the room through open doors and windows. After optimization, the extremely low power consumption achieved by the ZMOD4510 is the key to achieving longer battery life for such battery-powered devices.



“The primary consideration for outdoor air quality measurement is location – air quality levels can vary greatly from street to street, or even on either side of the same street,” said Uwe Guenther, Senior Director of the Sensor Solutions Business Unit at Renesas’ IoT and Infrastructure Business Unit. “The enhanced ZMOD4510 enables manufacturers to achieve the selective high-precision sensing, ultra-small size, and long battery life required for battery-powered devices such as smartwatches and mobile phones, while also providing customers with a convenient and customized view of their environment in real time.”


Renesas’ unique software-configurable ZMOD platform provides design flexibility for smart sensing systems by allowing field firmware updates to enable new application-specific functions such as selectable ozone sensing.


The ZMOD4510 is capable of quantifying selectable ozone levels as low as 20 ppb (20 parts per billion); this, combined with its low power consumption, small size and excellent flexibility, makes it an ideal solution for mobile and wearable devices, as well as industrial applications such as wireless security cameras and parking meters.




The new waterproof package enables the sensor to operate in harsh environments and underwater. The IP67-rated sensor maintains excellent accuracy and high performance without the need for expensive waterproofing systems; all in a very small 3mm x 3mm x 0.9mm LGA package. The sensor is fully calibrated for hydrophobic and oleophobic packaging at the factory, and customers can apply conformal coatings to their circuits without adding external membranes to the module.


Renesas has identified and created "Winning Product Combinations" system architectures for various applications, where the ZMOD4510 Series adds differentiated value to the system; for example, a Winning Product Combination for Smart Lighting, "Building Automation Lighting and Air Quality Sensor Solution," demonstrates an application case for building automation. The ZMOD4510 is calibrated to the U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA) Air Quality Index for ozone measurement and is highly siloxane resistant, providing excellent reliability when used in harsh environments.
