When you are about to go to the restroom, what do you do when you see a sign like this?

Are there many men entering the left side and many women entering the right side?

That said, color is one of the most important means of conveying information, even unconsciously, and is used every day in a variety of situations.

However, according to statistics, there are about 200 million people in the world with P-type and D-type color vision who have difficulty distinguishing red and green. 1) Some color combinations may not be able to accurately convey information.

The figure below is a schematic diagram showing the differences in color vision. As can be seen from the figure, people with type C color vision (determined as normal color vision in eye examinations) can distinguish all color differences, while people with type P color vision have difficulty distinguishing red and green.

In addition, due to individual differences in color vision, it is difficult to put yourself in the shoes of others and consider the color differences and inconveniences they see, so it is difficult for people around you to perceive the inconvenience caused by differences in color vision.

Taking a blood pressure monitor as an example, it is difficult for people with P-type and D-type color vision to distinguish “measuring” and “measurement completed” by the color of the button.

Therefore, in daily life, people with P-type and D-type color vision will encounter difficulties in many situations.

In order to convey the same message to more people, and considering the growing social demand for devices with universal color designs for people with different color vision, ROHM has developed a special wavelength (λD: 496nm/505nm) blue-green chip LED that helps achieve universal color designs for various devices 2) , thereby helping to solve social and livelihood issues. It is a rare 1608 size LED series in the industry that has obtained the Universal Color Design Organization ※ 3) certification.

Special wavelength blue-green SMD LEDs ideal for universal color design of equipment

There are many devices in the world that use red and green to convey information, but when using LED (color) to convey information, the importance of "color matching" is unquestionable. In fact, for people with P-type and D-type color vision who find it difficult to distinguish red and green, it is easier to identify blue-green and orange or yellow than to use red and green color combinations. Therefore, ROHM has newly developed blue-green LEDs "SMLD12E2N1W" and "SMLD12E3N1W". By adopting color schemes including ROHM's warm color LED "SML-D15DW (λD: 605nm)", it can be recognized by people with various color visions with different color visual perceptions, and is a product that is very suitable for universal color design.

<Overall features of the SMLD12 series>

Adopting new resin to ensure high reliability

The newly developed SMLD12 series products, including "SMLD12E2N1W" and "SMLD12E3N1W", adopt a new resin to improve the following problems encountered when using epoxy resin and silicone resin in the past, and have higher reliability. Therefore, they can be used with confidence in equipment that requires high reliability.

1) Compared with epoxy resin, the service life is extended by about 20 times

The SMLD12 series uses a new resin that can maintain brightness in a power-on test (25°C, IF=20mA, 1,000 hours of power-on). For example, when compared under the same luminous flux conditions, the life span is about 20 times longer than that of products using epoxy resin.

2) Compared with silicone resin, the injection molding strength is improved by about 25 times

In terms of mold strength, which directly affects mountability, the use of a new resin has made the mold strength at high temperature conditions (Ta = 150°C) about 25 times that of silicone resin products. This makes it less likely to cause problems during installation, thus achieving excellent mountability.

Examples of practical use of universal color design include:

◆Indicator lights on the operation panel of fire alarm systems, etc.

◆Safety warning lights for industrial equipment, etc.

◆Information boards at public transportation facilities

◆ Empty/full parking indicator lights

◆Battery charging status indicator

◆Display panels for hospital equipment such as nurse call systems, etc.

In summary, the launch of this series of products has added blue-green products that were not previously available in the ROHM product lineup, which not only provides new design options for customers but also contributes to society.

The following is the product lineup of this series. For more product details, please visit the ROHM official website .

<Terminology>

※1) People with P and D color vision

CUDO divides color vision into the following five categories:

※2)Universal color design

A method of using color that aims to accurately convey information to as many people as possible, targeting people with various color vision.

※3)General color design agency

CUDO (Color Universal Design Organization) is a Japanese NPO corporation that aims to create a "human-friendly society" by improving the color environment of society and bringing more convenience to people with different color vision.
