The module is designed for Wi-Fi 6E/7 and supports coexistence with 5G, demonstrating the company’s leadership in both wireless technologies
Qualcomm Technologies Inc. today announced a new RF front-end module designed to deliver the best Wi-Fi and Bluetooth experience. This expanded portfolio is designed for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 6E and the next-generation standard Wi-Fi 7. The module is suitable for a wide range of terminal categories beyond smartphones, including automotive, extended reality (XR), PCs, wearable devices, mobile broadband and the Internet of Things.
Christian Block, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm’s RF front-end business, said:
With the new products, Qualcomm Technologies is extending our leadership in RF front-end technology to the automotive and IoT sectors, helping OEMs address industry-specific challenges such as development costs and scalability. OEMs using Qualcomm Technologies solutions can design products with higher performance, longer battery life and faster time to market, thereby accelerating the pace of innovation and providing consumers with better experiences.
In fiscal 2021, Qualcomm Technologies ranked first in revenue in the field of smartphone RF front-end. The launch of the new RF front-end module is in line with the company's strategy, which is to expand the company's leadership in the smartphone field to the automotive and IoT fields through modem-to-antenna solutions, making Qualcomm Technologies a global leader in RF front-end covering different industries. Currently, most of the 5G cars, 5G fixed wireless access CPEs and 5G PCs that have been released or are under development and use Qualcomm Technologies' connectivity chips use its RF front-end technology or components. In addition, Qualcomm® RF front-end technology is accelerating its application in consumer-grade IoT terminals, such as wearable devices.
The Wi-Fi RF front-end module integrates the key components required between the Wi-Fi baseband chip and the antenna, amplifying and adapting the signal to support optimal wireless transmission. Manufacturers can use the above modules to quickly and economically develop Wi-Fi client devices. The new module supports the coexistence of 5G and Wi-Fi, and works with Qualcomm ultraBAW™ filters to support 5G/Wi-Fi concurrency, enhancing the wireless connection performance of terminals using cellular networks.
Manufacturers can use the new modules and Qualcomm Technologies' client connectivity products, such as Qualcomm FastConnect™ 7800 Wi-Fi 7/Bluetooth wireless connectivity system and Snapdragon 5G Modem and RF System, to provide advanced wireless features for devices such as those using Snapdragon® Connect technology. Manufacturers can also choose to use third-party Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chipsets for use with the above modules.
Currently, the new RF front-end module is being sampled to customers, and commercial terminals equipped with this new solution are expected to be available in the second half of 2022.
