Self-cultivation of a siege lion丨The coolest female engineer
The unknown is not scary.
Fear of the unknown is scary.
Approach them.
Maybe you can love it too!
Later I realized that what I wanted to do most was to solve cool and interesting problems and make a difference.
——Grace Wang
Grace Wang is a senior engineer in Qualcomm’s product security group, where she works with different business units to create more secure products. Grace is a member of Qualcomm’s Women in Science and Engineering Board, where she leads a series of programs where external speakers provide training for employees on topics such as leadership and overcoming fear.
Grace recalled that her first contact with technology was when she was 10 years old. Her parents were programmers, and when Grace was young, her father decided to teach her VB programming. Later, Grace made a program about dinosaurs. She said that what impressed her most at that time was the big computer and her father, rather than learning to code.
When Grace was in high school, she wasn't sure if she wanted to study computer science. She was really good at math and science, and she loved them, but she also had a lot of other interests. She was in band, she played sports, and she was involved in clubs at school. For a while, she was sure she would become a lawyer. Throughout high school, she spent her time taking classes and participating in these extracurricular activities, and researching various career possibilities. Then Grace realized that what she wanted to do most was to solve cool, interesting problems and make a difference! And technology was the best place to do that.
Recently, Grace was on vacation and spent more than an hour chatting with her Airbnb host about mobile security, privacy, and policy. Since she is not from the technology industry, she is not sure if she has the right to speak out. But she thinks it is important for people to have the right to speak out on these issues because they affect everyone.
Grace said she has talked to many people who claim that they don't understand technology and find it scary. Grace encourages them to give it a try, either by taking a class, attending a seminar, or asking questions. Technology, especially the mobile world, is a very important part of everyone's life. Basically everything we do is inseparable from it.
Do you also think that technology is hard to understand and scary? Try to get in touch with them more. Like Grace said, you can take some courses, attend a lecture, or ask more friends around you who are familiar with technology. Maybe you will also like this field?
The same is true in life. You may encounter many problems that seem difficult at first, but if you try boldly, you will find that reality may not be so scary. So, give it a try!
