Professor Chung Laung Liu , a world-renowned Chinese scientist in the field of computer science , passed away a few days ago.
Born in 1934, died at the age of 86.
Professor Liu Jionglang was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong. He was originally enrolled in National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu, Taiwan. He later went to the United States to study on an MIT scholarship and obtained a Ph.D. in computer science from MIT in 1962.
After graduating with a Ph.D., he stayed at MIT to teach. In 1972, he moved to UIUC to teach and became the assistant vice president of UIUC.
In 1998, he became the president of National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu, Taiwan. During his four years in office, the university's academic reputation surpassed that of National Taiwan University and ranked first in Taiwan.
It is worth mentioning that Professor Liu Jionglang has many students all over the world, including Academician Yao Qizhi, the only Chinese winner of the Turing Award.
Academician Yao Qizhi's doctoral dissertation at UIUC was supervised by Professor Liu Jionglang.
In addition, Professor Liu Jionglang is also a dual Fellow of IEEE and ACM.
He has made outstanding contributions to real-time systems, computer-aided design, VLSI layout, combinatorial optimization, discrete mathematics and other fields.
His paper "Scheduling Algorithms for Multiprogramming in a Hard-Real-Time Environment", published in the Journal of the ACM in 1973, has been cited more than 12,491 times (as of 2020) and has had a huge impact.
In 2011, he won the Kafman Award, known as the "Nobel Prize in EDA."
The discrete mathematics textbook "Elements of Discrete Mathematics" he wrote has been adopted by many universities around the world as the main textbook or important reference textbook for discrete mathematics.
Professor Liu Jionglang will be remembered forever!
