The IEEE Computer Society announced today that the 2019 Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award will be awarded to Zhihua Zhou, professor of computer science and artificial intelligence at Nanjing University, in recognition of his "contributions to machine learning and data mining."
Professor Zhou's research interests mainly lie in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data mining. The IEEE Computer Society said that he has made outstanding contributions to ensemble learning algorithms, weakly supervised learning, and multi-label learning.
The Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award is established to recognize outstanding innovative contributions in the field of computer and information science and engineering over the past 10-15 years. Such contributions must significantly promote technological progress in the field.
The award is named after Edward McCluskey, the first president of the society. It was first awarded in 1985 and has 84 winners to date. The number of winners varies from year to year, and only one winner was announced this year.
Previously, Lenovo CTO Rui Yong, Georgia Tech professor Ling Liu, former Kingsoft Software CEO Zhang Hongjiang, and 2017 Turing Award winner David Patterson were all winners of this award.
Zhou Zhihua is not only the director of the Computer Science Department of Nanjing University, but also the author of the well-known "Watermelon Book" "Machine Learning".
He also led the establishment of the School of Artificial Intelligence at Nanjing University and served as its dean. He is also the executive deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of New Technologies in Computer Software and the founding director of the Machine Learning and Data Mining Institute (LAMDA).
In addition, Zhou Zhihua is a fellow of the Association for Computer Science (ACM), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), the International Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET/IEE), the China Computer Federation (CCF), the China Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI), and a foreign academician of the European Academy of Sciences. He is also an advisor to the artificial intelligence industry of the Nanjing Municipal Government, a member of the Science and Technology Supervision Expert Advisory Committee of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and a vice chairman of the Jiangsu Youth Federation.
The Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award will be presented with a certificate and a $2,000 prize at the International Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC) on July 17, 2019.
