Is the EU about to usher in stricter standby power consumption standards?

Perhaps. The European Commission (EC) recently began evaluating the current Lot 6 “horizontal” standby energy efficiency standard (EC) 1275/2008 and its 2013 amendment Regulation (EU) No 801/2013. As a “horizontal” energy efficiency standard, it specifies maximum standby power consumption limits for various product groups.

Most EU regulations include amendments. Therefore, the EU must complete the review in 2016 and focus on the following areas:

  • Scope and requirements for standby and off modes

  • The appropriateness and level of standby power requirements for connected devices for the Phase III standard to be implemented in 2019

  • Inclusion of products not currently covered (e.g. professional equipment and products with remote-controlled motors)

The review will also evaluate other aspects of standby/off modes and standby power consumption of connected devices, including potential vulnerabilities and areas that need to be clarified.

The European Commission will publish an interim report at the end of this year, with the final report due in June 2016.
