Power Integrations launches new programmable, compact and efficient zero-voltage switching power supply IC
Power Integrations
today launched
the
InnoSwitch™4-Pro
series of digitally controllable offline constant voltage/constant current zero-voltage switching (ZVS) flyback ICs that can significantly reduce the size of power adapters. These highly integrated devices feature robust PowiGaN gallium nitride primary switches with steady-state switching frequencies up to 140kHz, reducing the component count and component count required for ultra-compact adapter applications in mobile phones, laptops, tablets and multi-port accessory markets. Aditya Kulkarni, product marketing manager at Power Integrations, said: "InnoSwitch4-ProIC can be seamlessly integrated with Power Integrations' ClampZero series of active clamp ICs to achieve ZVS in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). ZVS, combined with our PowiGaN™ technology, virtually eliminates switching losses and its efficiency of over 95% allows designers to eliminate heat sinks, thermal pads and potting materials typically required for thermal management.”
The size of the adapter can be further reduced if MinE-CAP™ devices are used in addition to the InnoSwitch4-Pro and ClampZero ICs. MinE-CAP IC is also based on PowiGaN technology and can reduce the size of the input capacitor by approximately 40%.
The InnoSwitch4-Pro IC is capable of delivering up to 220W of power in an ultra-thin InSOP™-28 package that integrates a 750V PowiGaN primary switch, controller, FluxLink™ reinforced insulation feedback link for secondary-side control, I2C interface, active clamp drive, and synchronous rectification. The high level of integration greatly simplifies the development and manufacture of fully digitally controlled, high-efficiency power supplies. These digitally controllable flyback ICs, when used in conjunction with ClampZero and MinE-CAP companion devices, meet the ultra-compact and slim form factor design requirements that are very much needed in OEM, non-original USB PD, and Universal Fast Charge Specification (UFCS) adapter market applications. UFCS is a new standard released by the China Communications Standards Association.
InnoSwitch4-Pro IC uses a unique control method to achieve ZVS in both DCM and CCM. When used in conjunction with ClampZero ICs, this control method supports higher operating frequencies without loss of efficiency. When used alone, the InnoSwitch4-Pro product also supports quasi-resonant switching operation in DCM and CCM modes. DCM-only operation is optional to reduce SR FET voltage stress. The new IC also features an optimized command set to reduce the likelihood of I2C data congestion.
InnoSwitch4-Pro flyback switcher ICs provide excellent constant voltage/constant current accuracy, are not affected by external components, and have no-load power consumption of less than 30mW while providing safety and protection functions such as input voltage detection. The device has comprehensive protection functions, providing automatic restart or latching fault response for output overvoltage and undervoltage protection, as well as multiple output undervoltage fault thresholds, latching or hysteresis primary overtemperature protection, and output bus switch short-circuit protection.
