From October 2 to 6, ON Semiconductor participated in the International Lighting and Building Technology and Equipment Exhibition, an international event for the smart lighting and smart building industries held in Frankfurt, and demonstrated innovative solutions such as networked lighting, smart buildings, and triggered imaging. Let’s take a look at the advantages of these solutions.

High Energy Efficiency LED Driver
150 W PFC + LLC LED driver
The following two solutions use our latest LED driver and PFC controller technology.
150 W Deep Dimmable LED Driver Evaluation Board
● Small footprint
● High efficiency. At full load and 110 V AC, the efficiency is 91.3%. At full load and 230 V AC, the efficiency is 93.0%.
● At 33% load, 110 V AC, total harmonic distortion (hereinafter referred to as "THD") is less than 10%
● At 33% load, 230 V AC, the power factor (hereinafter referred to as "PF") is higher than 0.9
● Complies with EN 50055CN standard
● Lower bill of materials (BOM) cost
150 W ultra-thin and energy-efficient LED driver
● Due to the adoption of gallium nitride (GaN) technology and high operating frequency, the solution has a thin and light profile (circuit board size: 235 mmx30 mmx21 mm), an efficiency of over 94%, and a power consumption of less than 300 mW in standby mode.
● Using critical conduction mode PFC controller NCL2801CDA and high-performance current mode LLC controller NCP13992, with high PF and low THD
● Low THD. At 50% load and 264 V AC, THD is less than 8%
● High PF. Under 50% load, 230 V AC, greater than 0.9
● Using the controller NCP13992 for the half-bridge resonant converter, a 600v gate driver is achieved, reducing the number of external components and simplifying the layout
● 150W output power without heat sink
Connected lighting platform
● Modular development kit for developing cost-effective industrial LED lighting solutions
● Extremely energy efficient, with wireless control (on/off, dimming, etc.) and two independently controlled LED channels, providing 1000-7000 lumens of brightness, and 10-70 W of output power
● Modular design includes four boards, standby power consumption is less than 200 mW
Two-in-one solution provides both lighting and connectivity:
The IEEE 802.3bt compliant LED driver NCL31000 delivers over 90 W via Power over Ethernet (PoE) and includes two auxiliary DC-DC converters to power microcontrollers and sensors.
An innovative application for this device is visible light communications (VLC), which is not possible in lighting systems using separate LED drivers and PoE controllers. This involves modulating (invisible) data directly onto an LED light, allowing it to act as a location beacon for indoor positioning systems such as Yellow Dot™, thereby overcoming the challenges currently used by other wireless systems (GPS, Wi-Fi™, etc.) A significant problem with this use.
● High efficiency. Operating at 300 mA, the efficiency exceeds 90%; operating at 600 mA, the efficiency exceeds 95%; operating at 2.2 A, the maximum efficiency reaches 97.2%
● High linear dimming (0.05% INL)
Smart building
Pre-certified KNX System-in-Package (SiP) NCN5140S
Simplifies the development of access control and control panels, integrating all the key and certifiable components of a KNX device in a single package, including a digital KNX transceiver, a 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M0+ microcontroller with a pre-certified software stack, and a system power DC-DC converter. The high level of integration of the NCN5140S significantly reduces the bill of materials cost, allowing manufacturers to develop very thin and modern designs (total thickness <5 mm).
The pre-certified KNX SiPNCN5140S and new smart LED driver NCL31000 support major building automation protocols, providing manufacturers with the latest technology and first-mover advantages to shorten the development time of smart building control panels and connected lighting.
