Microchip Launches New Dual-Channel USB Port Power Controller

Microchip Technology Inc., a global leading supplier of integrated microcontroller, mixed signal, analog devices and Flash patent solutions, recently announced the expansion of its programmable USB port power controller product portfolio with the launch of the new dual-channel UCS2112 device. This new port power controller can support 2 ports, and each port has 8 programmable continuous current limits ranging from 0.53 to 3.0 amps, which can achieve faster charging with higher currents. To protect and improve overall system uptime, the new device also integrates current monitoring, high-precision current limiting, charging rationing and dynamic temperature management. UCS2112 can help designers meet the needs of a variety of host devices, such as laptops, tablets, monitors, docking stations and printers in automotive, computer, education and aviation applications, as well as multi-port charging accessories and storage devices. The new device is flexible in operation and can operate independently or be combined with a USB hub to create a complete charging and/or USB communication system.


“USB charging is now trending toward supporting higher currents, driven by larger form factors in phones and tablets with larger batteries,” said Rich Simoncic, vice president of Microchip’s analog power and interface products group. “Our new UCS2112 provides the safety features necessary for these solutions, while also including current monitoring and thermal management to maximize system uptime and reliability.”



To provide a better end-user experience, the UCS2112's dynamic temperature management function reduces the current limit when the temperature approaches the limit, thereby preventing shutdown and ensuring normal charging when other devices are completely stopped. The UCS2112 integrates current monitoring, so no external sense resistor is required; it also provides an "additional detection" signal function, which works independently of the main power supply and has no effect even when the host is turned off or in sleep mode. Current monitoring and rationing also help manage multiple charging devices at the same time and can balance dynamic load current for systems with smaller power.


UCS2112 supports the USB power transmission standard developed by the USB Industry Forum, and also complies with various charging specifications including USB-IF BC1.2.


Development Support

The UCS2112 Port Power Controller is supported by Microchip’s new UCS2112 Evaluation Board (Part Number: ADM00639), which is available now through microchipDIRECT, a Microchip sales representative or authorized worldwide distributor.
